I recently purchased a  open pontil Dr. Wistars medicine bottle. I noticed the bottom has a backwards 4 X 4 embossed on it. Has anyone ever seen this before or have a idear what it might stand for or why it was put there.

Its an interesting question so I added my thoughts on the Medicine Bottle Forum.

I would like to hear Red's theory on the subject.
If others have similar marked bottles please post them.

I don't know what the numbers denote but strongly believe they are from an Ohio glasshouse. In addition to the Circleville Ohio liniments with these markings there are several pontil era liniments from Cincinnati and with the same markings. I've never seen any from outside of that area.

You think the Sweet's was made in Ohio? That is the only one I would really question.

Just from looking at the bottle, I'd say yes. It would seem unlikely being it was blown for a NY merchant with so many glasshouses in NY and the northeast. Who is to say he didn't have a connection with someone at the glasshouse and the price was right?

I don't believe so, but I have a 8 sided open pontilled Dr. Feller's Eclectic Liniment from Greenfield Oh. that has a similar marking but cannot remember what it is. It is boxed up right now but will check next time I see it. For some reason I think it may be different.
