Here is a picture of a Dr. Henry's Electric Ointment Cure.
I have seen this listed as being a bottle but this clearly shows it was a tin. Does anyone know if this product was produced in two different containers?

This tin shows Dr Henry of Waterbury, VT was in business with A.J. Green of Highgate, VT.  AJ was father to GS Greene of blood purifyer fame. The tin pre-dates the Blood Purifyer by about 25-30 years. I only wish I had the bottom part of the tin, which must have been tin.  Does anyone know? Also, notice the bit of rust on the bottom of the tin. Would a little rust preventative devalue the tin? Joel

I like it Joel! Might have been a cover to a milkglass jar. I've seen similar. Rust is never a good thing, but most of it seems to be around the edges so it shouldn't decrease the value too much. Wouldn't have a clue as to it's worth but it's a nice slice of history. You always have interesting pieces!

Thanks Lobe ole boy,

Now I wondered about the milk glass or better still, a potjar. It was found sitting next to a potjar, pictured next to it (you can see the corner). The lid fits the pot jar perfectly but is a bit sloppy, not tight. I was wondering if, perhaps, there was cork or some kind of fill in the lid top.

Regardless, a VT collector, who had never seen an "Ointment Bottle" (as listed)" ruled out the piece found adjacent the lid (in the attic, by the way) was part of the entire package.

I am not so sure, as I still believe the potjar went with the top. Until someone can prove otherwise, I will always believe that. Who has a picture of an original Electirc Ointment in a bottle, as listed in Kovels, Fritschel's article and even Matt Knapp's price guide to medicine? I would love to see it.

How about some of you Vermont collectors out there.

Joel

It fits perfectly around, it is just a sloppy fit not tight as you would think it should be, but then again, it is tin.

and a close up of the jar sitting next to the lid. This was found just like you see it, sitting on a top plate (final board that tops the wall studs in a house) in an attic in Brandon, Vermont. It was found by a guy who was tin knocking in his attic. He brought it to me for identification.

Now it is sitting in my collection.

Hey Kazoo,

I doubt you would ever find one that is legible in the earth. It dates to the 1850's and most would be rotted by now. The ones still around and I believe there are few, in fact I have never seen another, are few and far between.

This lid shows Henry of Waterbury, and great marketer, was selling ingredients by AJ Green, and that the Electric Ointment was produced by AJ Green. Most listings for this product has been attributed to being a bottle. Much of what we do is research and research and research some more, then speculate the rest.

Here is a link to read more about the era and Vt's contribution to the medicine world http://www.fohbc.com/PDF_Files/MedsfromGreenMtnState.pdf

Some really nice pontil medicines came from here as well.
Thanks for the interest.

Joel

Here is the other Green's Bottle without the DR Green's embossment. This one would have been sold at stores. I also have three different large victorian card siwth some great literature on the back. I will try to find the jpgs of them and send them along. This stuff cured everything including "female weakness".

A closer shot of the upper difference. The next will be the bottom two, again different, in that one is embossed Enosburg Falls, VT and the other is plate is blank

The second card had the same testimonial literature on the back of the first card shown here. Note the back of this one is different and also note the many doctors etc. mentioned.
I can't say enough about Bill Lindseys knowledge, attributes to the hobby and his bottle collection. He is liquidating many of his bottles and you should really check out his page to see some nice glass for sale. Much of it was used as models in his highly acclaimed website at http://www.historicbottles.com/.

Bill is now retired and fishing the great northwest wilderness with his son.
Once again I got carried away and digressed from my original post, although it was quite progressive. Don't forget the original question. Is it a jar or a bottle?
Thanks all and thanks to Roger again for making it all possible.
Joel

The Henry's Electric Ointment bottle is a small wide mouthed bottle typical of what was used for pile medicines and other salves.  It wouldnt suprise me if your tin went on the top of that milkglass jar. I have also see salve containers that were two tin halves put together.

Matt,

I will always believe the lid went with the jar, until I see a picture showing me different. I hear opinions on it but no varification.

I don't believe this jar is milk glass. It is a clay pottery jar. Here is a better shot.
