Hi,
As far as I can tell Dr J S Clark is not the New York J Clark.

It is listed in "The Bottle Book" by Richard Fike - first published 1987
Here is the citation (the // indicates a new line on the label).  DR J.S. CLARK'S//BALSAM FOR THE//THROAT & LUNGS -Fike 1987:23
I don't currently have the book, but it is available on Amazon (and I'm sure other places). I  have an extensive citation index and found it there.

Also I think he was from the Malden, Mass area where he was President of the Middlesex East district of The Medical Societies Of  Massachusetts in 1892.

Hope this helps.

Could it be a LA Dr. Joseph Samuel Clark
The University remained in New Orleans until 1912, when Legislative Act 188 authorized its change of location from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. The University was reopened on the new site on March 9, 1914, under the presidency of Dr. J.S. Clark.

http://www.subr.edu/historysubr.html

The 1871 Carrollton Teachers Institute included an address by Superintendent Conway entitled “Elements Necessary to a Successful School Work.” Other lectures and discussions were delivered by the Reverend William Rollinson, Secretary of the State Board of Education, who lectured on the “Moral Influence of the Teacher in the School;” and Dr. J.S. Clark, of the New Orleans Board of Health, whose address “Health,” stressed the importance of healthy personal regimens, and healthy school environments to education.

A bunch of refs in Nottingham too but I'd stick with the LA angle.

nevermind, born 1871. perhaps a relative

Matt, I checked with a friend who specializes in early balsams. He has one with a label but no where on the label does it mention where its from. Cool looking bottle, reminds me of a Greggs Constitution Life Syrup with the cathedral shaped panels.

I am very interested in these larger cathedral panelled meds. So far the origin of this one has eluded me. Its dissappointing the label didnt have more info. They are normally a weath of info along with newspaper ads and trade cards.
Very common names like CLARK make it even harder to track down info, there were tons of early Clarks.

Just a follow-up to my post above. I initially wrote : Also I think he was from the Malden, Mass area where he was President of the Middlesex East district of The Medical Societies Of New Hampshire in 1892. I meant to write Massachusetts.

Here is the refernce where he is listed:

Thanks guys, both of those seem like they could be possible leads.
I have an unfounded feeling this may be a NY bottle so the Seneca Clark sounds interesting. I'll figure it out at some point , just takes time.
There sure were a lot of Clarks running around...

It makes me wonder what kind of docter he was. If you read that closely his entire family seams to have died very youg. Even his wife was 31? Did his balsam of life kill them? No offence to the family, it's just odd, even for that time period and all these...

Interesting...I found a small note from 1886 in "The News" of Frederick, MD referring to a Lt. Greely being the guest at Melrose, MA of Dr. J. S. Clark.
1880 Census shows J. S. Clark age 42 b. ME  Father b. VT mather b. ENG occupation: Physician Residence Essex St. Melrose, Middlesex Co. MA. (suburb of Boston)

Might just be your guy. Oh, by the way, this guys wife, Eliza and daughter Ameretta? were b. in LA!!!

OK, the guy I posted about above is the same guy Webworker found,  the President of the Middlesex East district of The Medical Societies Of  MA. His name is Julius S. Clark.
But, I've tracked him from 1850 ME to 1870 LA to 1920 MA and no where is he referred to as anything other than a physician. I checked Middlesex Co. Directories through the 1880s. If he was manufacturing a medicine, it wasn't listed.
If you get any other leads, let me know.
