Here's the dump I'm digging down in Mass. There was nothing showing, it was strictly a "probe-find" which I get great satisfaction from ( can you tell :) )

Last week, I got several nice whole 1870s bottles, and some really good older shards. So yesterday, I woke up at 4 am and couldn't get back to sleep thinking about what I might find. So I dug from 6 am til 4 pm, and really tore into the place. It turned into more of a typical 1890s TOC landfill type dump, and I spent most of the day starting new holes, trying to find another older vein. I had an ok day, but not really considering the amount of digging I did. I got spoiled last weeks, and set my expectations too high - the kiss of death when bottle digging

The black flies are NASTY right now. Bug spray does nothing, and once you get sweating, they attack. The only escape, and it worked really well, was digging a hole and getting down into it. Also, I have a digging tip, that I wish I had thought of years ago. Using a safety pin to clip the back of my tee shirt to the top of my pants in the back, to keep the dirt from falling down your butt. Last week my underpants were full of dirt and ash by the end of the day, which makes for an uncomfortable dig and drive home. Sorry, not a pleasant visual. Yesterday, with my new safety clip method, it was much more comfortable.

I was psyched to get this Haleys Ink. I now have 2 different size clear ones, and this aqua one. I dug all 3. I don't remember seeing a Haleys ink anywhere except my 3, so I'm thinking it's a local company? Maybe Lowell? anyone know?

Some local stuff, along with a bottle from Logansport Indiana! what the heck is a bottle from their doing in Mass? is this a common bottle in the midwest?

I woke up this morning again early, and got out of bed to try to dig more before work, but my arms and shoulders were throbbing. That was a long day yesterday. Maybe tomorrow a.m..

Thats all for now.
Looking forward to seeing stuff that you guys are finding !

I hate when you just know your about to dig buckets full of colored pontils. It's always down hill from there. But that's what gets us back out there to do it again. My Kiss of Death has always been bringing plenty of boxes to put the bottles in.It's like a curse.Looks like you found some good stuff regardless, could be an older spot close by.I don't miss them FREAKIN BLACK FLIES!Bug spray atleast works on skeeters.

Like Doug says, it is the anticipation of great finds that keeps us going, esp. when we start out finding signs of a great dig! Getting our hopes up is the only thing that keeps me going sometimes. I have had to leave the bottom of a pontiled privy unfinished due to darkness and exhaustion. I went to bed with visions of historical flasks, colored pontiled meds etc.the night before only to be very disappointed with some broken lamp chimneys and puffs.
The boxes jinx hit me today too! I went to look at a collection to buy from the widow of a guy that had a great collection years ago. I knew he sold most of it but kept some of the best items and I was hoping that is what I was going to see. Instead I went home with 3 damn empty boxes. She had some 1960s decorative wine bottles etc. left. I guess he gave the good ones to his kids. The other jinx I have is taking "before" pictures of the dig site. There is a strange kharma with bottles. If I have extra spending money, good bottles for sale disappear like a whitetail after opening day. If I'm broke, all the bottles I have been searching for for years that I need for my collection all come out at once. Bram, you did really great at this dump so don't get too bummed if you don't get pontils. I would love to find a spot like that. Besides, maybe there is still a pocket of Stoddard, Keene............

Bram, that shot of you in the hole is great...talk about getting into it.  You're in a great spot...Excellent age for a dump. I hope it gives up a great one for you.

I made it out yesterday and got hit with the same flies. worse, i saw a tick crawling on my bag and I've been itching the whole night. good tip about the safety pin. seems like my jeans fit fine when I put them on but as the day goes on, they get lower and lower. last time out, I had enough dirt in my crack to plant a row of tomatoes. the spot looks great and anything you get must put a smile on your face since you found it thru hard work alone. I spoke with a historian in our area and he gave me the location of 3 town landfills. except all are no trespassing.

Funny how often that happens, but you're still pullin good ones, I always love finding a good ink!  Maybe it's just me but when I even start to get cocky, it blows up in my face and the bottle world is full of humbling examples of that.  My kiss of death is pulling out the camera for a good bottle dig pic.  What should have been a good bottle instantly turns into a piece of crap!

The bugs in New England is what keeps people from starting to through-hike the AT North to South until July!    The no see ums and skeeters are starting here but the big pest season is end of May, first two weeks of June when the deerflies come out.  Until May I dont worry about ticks but still pull off loners Oct - May and even Dec, Jan, & Feb on a warm day.  After May, there's a population explosion and you have to spray your lower leg and foot ware or youll have armies crawling up.  I have a net jacket but even though lite it still makes me sweat and looking through the hood just doesn't work when youre diggin bottles.  Jesster, even though it says no tresspassing you could still get permission, find out who the owners are.

townships own the landfills, I believe ,and they are not friendly. God forbid  a bueracrat give a working man a break. I might innocently stroll through them with a probe untill told to vacate. I could always scream its my tax dollars buried there and I have the right to look.

Thanks for the replies, I really enjoy reading them.  Thats hilarious about bringing extra boxes being a jinx, I have said it for years!  it pisses off the bottle gods that you could be so arrigant to think you KNOW there will be a ton of keepers to bring home. That kind of arrogance brings on the bad Kharma every time :)

Got down to the dump for a few hours today and got a few more things to take home
