Does anybody know the history of E & J Burke Ltd who operated a bottling plant in New York until about 1940? I think they were called Burke Brewery, and one story I heard was that they were sold to raise money for the Brits to pay America for WW2 supplies.

Hi there....according to Van Wieren's "American Breweries II" they operated in Long Island City at 2701/2719 47th St. and 4624/4658 28th St. as Edward & John Burke, Ltd. in 1934, then as Burke Brewery (presumably at one or both of the above addresses...doesn't specify) from later in 1934 to 1949, then it morphed into Arthur Guinness & Sons, Inc. from 1949 to 1954.

What became of it after that is not specified. Van Wieren's book is great for the names of breweries over time and the dates of operation, but has no other historical information. It could well have been sold I suppose but operated under the same name...but that information is not in this book.

Good luck in your quest!
