I have finally picked up an early sugar or other utility type bowl with the original round final top intact.
This piece is flawless except for a good amount of base wear and 5 potstones, four of them located in
the in the bowl and one in the lid.The off hand glass always proportionally has a greater amount of
potstones then the general glass works output. The piece was made in the early 1800s based on the lack
of an applied footing seen on the earlier colonial era pieces. This piece I gave to my wife and she is slowly
starting to appreciate the older glass as long as it is not a bottle!!

The color is a nice green aqua and could have been made at any number of the glass houses here in
Southern New Jersey. The pontil is rough, deep and conical shaped suggesting the German gaffer
influence again. There are 16 ribs swirled to the right and the top fits quite snuggly suggesting a
conscientious worker made this piece. The bowl stands five and three quarters in height and is also five
and three quarters round at the widest point. The top has a folded over lip and over all the bowl is very
symmetrical in shape. The design of the cover reminds me of a Garden Gazebo roof.

11. From this view you can see how deeply conical the pontil is on this bowl. Most older American made glass sporting this type of pontil was usually done in the German Palitinate fashion. This is a good way not only to tell the age of any early piece but which ethnic influence was responsible for the making of it.

Steve, I noticed with interest that your early sugar looks a lot like the small pontiled, ribbed bowl that I bought last year. It too has a rolled over lip and stands 3-1/2" high. The only thing that I am missing is a top. I thought that maybe mine was a modern reproduction but now I am not so sure. What do you think? Could this be the real deal?

Dan the neck on yours is different,is there a lot of wear on the bottom? One of the ways to tell the the Mexican or other type of reproductions
in circulation is does the ribbing go under the bottle or does it stop short of the the bottom. If the ribbing goes under the bottle it is most likely an original as the repros I have seen have the swirls fade into the side the wall.
