We were finishing up a second privy on an extremely old lot in a good part of town and didn't have a whole lot to show.We had found out the old pits were under a garage on another lot that was portioned off of the original so an 80's era pit was the best one we would find.As I was scratching the last little bit of the use layer out,a face shows up.I am thinking no way, because hardly ever see portrait flasks, let alone in an 80's hole.Sure enough it comes out whole and really made my day.It is a qt. sized GI-37,a very common flask but not in the midwest.Scolls & eagles are the rule here.I love digging a bottle I have never found before.

Notice the seeds,do you think they where eating there share of maters and berries?

Now that's what digging is all about! Just when you think you're getting skunked you pull out something like that. I've been digging my arms off for something like that. Even the scrolls and eagles are cool digs, even if they are common. Thanks for the pics! Chris

Awesome Doug - ( I keep calling you Dug by accident)

That had to feel great to get such a large flask in one piece. And uncovering the face first had to make it a pretty intense dig. I'm going to print up this photo of yours to put in my scrapebook that I use when I give talks on bottles, so I can show folks what the "seed" layer looks like. So thanks for the great photo!

And how far down were you when you hit the seed layer there? It doesn't look deep because of the light, or did you use a flash.

Thanks to all that replied. It was a fun dig for sure.

As far as the photos,I am normally in too excited to stop and take a picture but have been trying to on any flasks I dig. They come out great with a flash at any depth(this one was only about 6ft. deep) but have taken several at 10-14ft. deep and they came out great,too..Almost better than above ground,go figure.

       Bram,

Thought you might like to see the alternative to a nice fluffy seed layer, after bailing 3 ft. of water we made it down to a sticky black, methane filled muck.We call it "poop soup".By the time we made it to the black muck I wasn't touching my camera.

This is just a picture of the water in the bucket before we got to the stink!
