Got out for an hour today before the festivities began.  I think my "seam" ran out.  I'm back into the more recent stuff.
Found a few marbles and little pill bottles.  Mainly lots of sweat and no finds.  But, as dirtflickers thread proves, we're in it for more than that!  Of course I still enjoyed being outside, digging, and seeing history pass through my fingers.  Great stuff, even if there was no "great stuff!"

Here are the sodas - all from Columbus, Ohio.  Anyone heard of them before?
"Vess Billion Bubble Beverage"
and

And a closer shot.
How do you preserve the paint?  It comes off so easily.  Any ideas?

Yooper, to preserve the paint on those ACL's, you just gently wash the loose dirt off with water and then go to wamart...in the craft dept they sell a spray clear coat product that will preserve the paint on the bottle....just spray a light coat and let dry....then give it another light coat and you should be good.

Nice sodas, Tim. DF is right on with how to preserve the paint. Just be VERY gentle when washing them. I find pyro milk bottles like that all the time. Sometimes they are fairly easy to save, other times there just isn't much you can do  On very good, scarce bottles, I will fix up the faded spots with paint. It's still not as good as an original, mint bottle, but they will display nicely. I have repainted ACL bottles with totally wasted paint and had them turn out looking decent. Once I am satisfied with the paint job, I will spray the bottle with the clear lacquer spray. This will keep your new paint from rubbing off and will also preserve any remaining original paint.

Whistle was very popular back in its day. I have an embossed, hourglass-shaped Whistle bottle from Lewistown, PA. Jim

That Whistle looks OK.  I tell ya it's this Ohio dirt, eats that paint right up.  So far the only ACL I've pulled out of the ground that the paint was worth a hoot, was a turpentine bottle.  At least you finished your hole, now dig another.

Thanks for the tips, guys.

I'm really not too much into ACL bottles for the most part, but having dug these up, I tought it was a good opportunity to learn some preservation methods from the pros!

JGUIS,
I'mnot done with the hole...I think I can work this dump for another 5 years yet.  But the hole I'm on now is kinda on and off.  Hopefully tomorrow is a better day!

Tim

I always heard you should let the ACL's dry up a few days before trying to gently wash the dirt off.  Can't remember what but also read on here about good cleaners for cleaning up ACL's.  Anybody remember, especially the let em dry thing?

I've heard you're supposed to let them sit out in the sun a day or two so the paint can harden.

when getting the labels to stay on..you have to let them *gradually* try out....think of it as the bottle getting the "bends".....now..if its flaking off right out of the ground....most of it will likely come off.....but if it looks really good out of the ground..I wrap it in wet newspaper and let it dry off over a longer period of time (a week...a few days..two weeks..I dunno....) - some ground conditions are just NOT good for ACL bottles.....milk bottles are even tougher to save......but by wrapping them in wet newspaper..Ive saved a few .....the clear coat idea is ok.but.....it doesnt work as good as it sounds.....OH...you can also use oil to keep the label on too......that worked a few times.....maybe putting oil on the label right out of the ground might work..never tried that..but keeps old copper coins I dig up from drying out too fast (same sort of situation)
