Nice...I hit the park across the street from me (100 yr old park, huge pine trees, small tot lot) and all i picked up were 3 soda cans buried at about 6", general junk metal, some pop tabs and about 50cents in clad...the problem with this park is that it was the park that Henry Ford made for his workers up here...they did the 4th of july stuff here, company picnics etc.....so much trash buried...soup cans, coffee cans, tabs etc...need to clean it out i guess.

Iron I think I mayve been by that place a couple times in the UP. Doesnt it have a sign near the road that has the Ford logo? I thought it was up in the Keewenaw. Havent been up there since 2001. I did recently dig a silver spoon with the Ford logo on it. Wondered if someone brought it from up there or maybe near Detroit at Greenfield village.
There was a big even at the fairgrounds some warrior obstacle course, with thousands attending. Figuring Iam going over tomorrow and detect the area.

you're right...that's in Alberta, which is just before Baraga/L'anse on hwy 41...it's on the side of the road next to the river....Alberta is where he had his logging operation for gliders and for the Flivver etc.....my house actually came from there..they loaded it on a rail car and hauled it down here......
here's my house...bungalow/craftsman 3 story "foreman's" house....the 19th in this area...all of the other houses around here are your typical four square houses that are small on space that he built for his workers.......another side note: if you flip up a piece of the wood flooring, it'll have the Ford logo on it...he used the excess wood from building cars etc...to do the flooring for all these houses..

Interesting about the floor boards. I thought that place was off 41. I would think that park area would have a dump area. With picnics and events going on Id think you could find some old coins there.
I am probably going to brave the heat and work a dump for awhile tomorrow, and maybe do some detecting too.

sounds fun...although the humidity is killer...in a week i'm going to houghton to inlaws for a week...going to be bottle digging like crazy...a huge ravine/gulley that goes about 200yards and is full of bottles...daughter and i only got 1foot down and we ended up with a ton of junk beer bottles and some sodas from the 40's....mother in law says the farm is over 100yrs old...so we're going where we were and going to dig deep....also 2 old privy sites on the land (from mid to late 1800's) and about 10 more dumps and an old 20' hole that was dug to start a well but was given up on...it's full of bottles..... if i gets too hot, i'm going to be detecting old logging trails, the old area of the farm and trails.....want to find some float copper....i've found about 4lbs and father in law has quite a few 5gal pails full.....ppl across from the farm found a 1600lb hunk when they were plowing....at 4-5$ per lb.....i could buy myself a new etrac!

Oh yes, I forgot that copper. Man Id be digging an detecting like crazy. Youre right about a big find paying off big! The bottle area sounds like a great spot. Good luck and if you can post a few pics of your finds. Id be very happy with some 5 gal pails of copper. Sounds like some great areas you have up there.

sounds good..when we get up there i'll post some copper pics...i posted some pics of the area daughter and i started digging....let me find the post..
http://www.antique-bottles.net/forum/Box-of-bottles-from-estate-sale-and-more/m-430771/tm.htm there it is...

with the new area of the ravine with bottles we stumbled upon, it's probably closer to 300yards...we are going to start at the beginning and clear all the junk from the top layer and then just start digging down and into the side of the walls of the ravine......some of the sodas we found where we were digging were from the mid to late 40's..and they were only a foot or so down....so that gives some hope lol...

I'll try to get some pics of the privy sites and other dumps too....it's nuts..i took a walk in the woods near the farm and i see what looks like a light bulb sticking up, i go over and find a lamp and about 4 garbage bags buried....you can find that stuff there all over....father in law was like, oh did you check near the old original house? i said huh? he said that when his great grandpa was building the house we now use as our deer camp, there was another house on the property that was the house they were living in before this one was built.....going to dig that sucker out and MD it like crazy....

Yes that link shure shows promise. I saw that `47 7-up. lots of those sodas can bring good money. Ive been working a 20s-40s dump nothing older than 41. But I havent got 1 soda bottle yet that isnt broken! But then I hit 3 old Cokes, a bunch of milks and creamers and meds. Plus some jewelry and coins. I need to get back there.
Today I went to the place that warrior obstacle course was set up (near Flint). I detected for a while and got some spendable change. Then I (the great Sultan of scrounge) look into the garbage cans and see cans and bottles, and grabbed maybe a few bucks worth, then jumped into a 30ft dumpster. The problem was most of the bags were covered with the obstacle walls (2X6S) but I was not to be denied, and kept digging to the next obstacle.....Full ice bags that hadnt melted. By now I am sweating like a pig. Finally I start ripping and throwing empty beer cans pop and energy drink returnables over the side of the dumpster.
Finally I was so tired and soaked from sweating I climbed out, and started bagging the cans/bottles.

I brought them back and sprayed them off with the hose, and sorted the scrap aluminum non returnables from the returnables. Just got back from turning them in at Meijers. Total 16.30 in cash. Not a lot but I figured I was there, and all I had to do was grab them up. And still have a good bunch of the scrap. Anyhow I figure that money can go for gas to go rummaging along with the 60.30 from scrap monday.

The funny part was when 4 lovely women pulled up and asked if I need help. I said nope Im just dumpster diving for returnables. The Passenger said that they had worked the concession stand and only sold Monster drinks. I said yes, theyre returnable and theres a whole lot of beer returnables too. Pretty women but Im an old guy of 49, and I wasnt going to be hooting on any women the age of my daughter!!. On to the next adventure!!!

Iron, I was sweating terrible before jumping into that dumpster, and I bet I didnt get to but maybe 1/4 of it. Now if Id had help Ill bet there was 3-4 times more than what I pulled out. But I was down to my lasy water bottle and didnt want to risk heat stroke with no one around. Sometimes you just get lucky.
Hoping the rummage sales this week will provide some good deals again. I was going to go digging this morn, but its been raining on and off. Maybe tomorrow or the next day.

yah..i was going to get out today and MD a bit...but by the time i had all the housework done, daughter to hunter's safety and back, trip to green bay and back it was 9...luckily, nothing on schedule tomorrow...going to head to a park where they just had this huge music festival...it's a BBQ cookoff thing and they have 5-10 bands that play all weekend...gets about 20k ppl and it was hot there....hopefully some sweat made some rings drop...or i'll just hit the park across the street.

my buddy has a 2box detector (besides his E-trac and Explorer)...he lives the chain of lakes in spread eagle, wi...about 4miles from me...the island across from his house was a Native American camp...there are pics and drawings from books showing the camp and where it was...we're going to take that 2box and hit that thing when the weather cools a bit.

wish i lived downstate again (grew up in GR)...there are never bottles at rummage sales here...ever, and I always ask...never know, might have some in the garage or basement ...estate sales once in awhile....and my buddy hooked up a box of bottles for 5bucks and the woman has a storage unit full of boxes of bottles...she's going to organize the place and call us to go get them. that'll be fun.

The Island spot sounds interesting. And, surely the park with all those people should show some coins. Iam going out tomorrow and either dig or MD for awhile. Plus do the rummage circuit. Hope to find some good bargains. Make a few bucks maybe. may even go back and do some MD at the site I got all the cans and bottles at. I didnt comb some of the areas and theres got to be more change there. Need to find where they had the pit of mud that people had to crawl under barbedwire, surely someone lost change or jewelry there.
Good luck with your adventure.

I hear you carobran...I started 2 years ago...First year i turned in all the clad I had found, 168 bucks...not bad for a few months and trying to figure it out....

have also found about 4000000lbs of junk and poptabs....i have a round ziploc storage container thing full of silver coins that i've found and a ziploc baggy full of wheats/indianheads/buffalo....best find so far 1877 Carson City Seated Dime.....

the one nice thing about living up here is the ground gets cold very quickly and stays frozen until may or so....so coins and such dont' have much of a chance to wear away...almost every wheat/silver coin i've found is still very legible and you can see much of the detailing...

i've only found 5 rings....all of them junk....but seeing that one with a huge CZ diamond on it almost made me fall over....

what detector are you using? i have a fisher f2 (inexpensive, fast recovery and goes pretty deep) wanting to upgrade to either a fisher 70/75 or a minelab explorer/e-trac...but need to pass that one through the wife first.....

friendly metal detecting forums is a great place for MD'ers...should check it out

carobran..ever go relic hunting for civil war era stuff? alot of guys on the forums I frequent either check old maps and such or just head off into the woods and look for foundations, plants and flowers growing in the woods (much of the time a good indication of some form of bldg had been there)..they find all kinds of cool stuff...badges,buckles, bells, silverware etc...

Caro-The BH`s work decent I have a couple I got back about 2003 I think I think they are quick draw 2s I am not sure on the models. But they have worked quite well. Ill get into some more expensive ones soon, but for now theyve found lots of coins and rings. The last ring I found was a smaller gold one at the local school playground. I usually take it to old foundations, buildings etc and work those area. Sometimes just wander trails or woods. Found arrows and coins/knives just in the most odd places. Oh, and ammunition, slugs buckshot, centerfires.
Being a scrapper, I love taking the Mds to the Grayling area where the National Gd trains. I usually hit a good batch of 50 bmg empties which add up in brass scrap pretty quick. You never know what youll hit on.
