Fiberglass Probe? - 9/7/2008 10:00:23 AM    edisonf   Posts: 5 Joined: 8/17/2008 Status: offline A local plumbing supply carries a 4' fiberglass "tile" probe with a brass tip for around $25. What does everyone think about this type of probe? I'm sure the sensitivity isn't the same as a spring steel but it would keep you from getting electrocuted! Thanks in advance for your replies. RE: Fiberglass Probe? - 9/7/2008 10:13:21 AM    beendiggin Posts: 801 Joined: 6/30/2005 Status: offline Steel makes certain sounds when it comes into contact with glass, brick, ash, etc. which resonates through the probe and out the tubular handle.  I'd guess fiberglass would not make those same sounds.  Also fiberglass could snap, splinter or break , especially after multiple uses weakening it.  Maybe in soft soils or sandy soils the breakage issue wouldn't be too bad.  It doesn't sound like a good alternative to me, besides, steel probes are cheap to make yourself .  You can try a welding shop if premade ones seem like too much money to spend. RE: Fiberglass Probe? - 9/7/2008 12:27:17 PM    ncbred Posts: 111 Joined: 6/20/2008 Status: offline My father is a plumber and uses the fiberglass probe to find the edges of septic tanks after they are buried so he can tie in the sewer line.  So I've tried using that but haven't had any luck finding an old privy next door.  In harder ground it would be easy to snap it into also.  Haven't tried a steel probe yet.
