Hi all
I'm not at all new to collecting antiques bottles. Lets just say there has been a long hiatus. I got into it as a teen in the 1970's and visited many cool dump sites with my family, including one in my home state of Pennsylvania, the dump of an abandoned hill top hotel that had burnt to the ground around the turn of the 19th century. So we knew everything we found there would be pre-1900, and we found some very cool things.

Over the years I lost interest in actual dump digging, but kept a lot of the more interesting finds. I am especially fond of cobalts and emeralds and also took a fancy to the patent medicines. Especially those with the most interesting names or most outrageous claims.

To make a long story short, I've been unemployed since February and turned to selling my bottles (along with other things) on E-bay. I was surprised at how successfull that has been, given the state of the economy. This renewed my interest in the hobby and I've actually bought a few. Though I would love to keep them, it would make the most sense to resell them, I have to keep the mortgage paid. But I don't know what these bottles go for now. I probably gave most of mine away.

So, and I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to post this, I am basically looking for appraisals on what I have and what I've recently bought.

The first was something I thought unique in that I had never come across a milk glass medicine bottle before. I did some research and found they were produced in the late 1800s by several manufacturers. Mine was made for John Sullivan a pharmacist in Boston (Pic attached, sorry about the yellowness of the pic, but with flash the embossing is wiped out). The bottle is pristine, not a crack, chip or scratch on it. I got into a minor bid war with a couple other people on E-bay over it, but ended up getting it for $32 with shipping. I'll admit I'm a little compulsive when I see something I want. But I found this so different from bottles I had collected before that I had to have it.

So my question is, was this a great score or did I let myself get ripped off? How common were these milk glass medicine bottles? What is the potential worth of the bottle if I resell it? I may not do that, it's so cool I really want to keep it.

Thanks,

Dave Franges

Hey Dave,

Welcome back to the bottle world...........once a member always a member.

Anyways, I love that bottle. I collect pharmacists and druggists bottle from California and haven't come across a single milk glass version.

But I did look that one up in Kovel's price guides and here's what I found:  from  1997 to 2004 that bottle sold for around $58.00. I don't have anything more recent than that but maybe some others around here will post their comments about it.

I wouldn't sell it, if I had it,  as pharmacists/druggists bottles in milk glass are unique.

Next is a gorgeous teal green Rumford Chemical Works bottle. I did some research on this one too and came up with this. http://www.littlerhodybottleclub.org/research/rumford.html

Still have no idea what it's worth.

Well I don't know what went wrong with the last post. Where's the pic?

Anyway, thanks Doug for your speedy reply . I post on a number of forums on different subjects and really never expected a reply before I could even complete my next post, LOL. I agree, I should consider this one "a keeper". But my significant other is looking at me like, "You're supposed to be selling this stuff, not buying it!" But I hold it in my hand and just have to say "Wow". I've never seen anything like it before. And it looks like it was made just yesterday, not a hundred years ago.

Hello Dave , and welcome to the forum . Can't give you any prices on your bottles , but I do like that milk glass bottle myself . As men , we know we have to take some heat from the little woman now and then , for crying out loud , it is expected that we do so ! If you like the bottle keep it and take a bit of heat for it , and sell the rest of the ones you have . I believe the Rumford is a pretty common bottle , or at least it is in my area . They do have a really nice color to them though .

Hey Franj,
I too have never seen a milk glass medicine from my area. Nice bottle. Here's that other picture.

Wow! That is quite a collection of milk glass. I never knew they made so many. I see a lot of medicines too. I love the case bottles on the top row.

Hello Dave, I just spent almost an hour composing a response and I lost it so here is a recap in a nut shell:

1.  Sorry to hear about current temporary set back.
2.  You did well on it. You have the more common variant of the two pictured.
3.  eBay has tanked and is no longer viable yardstick to measure value.  I  recently received a high bid for
$55.00 for a scarce New England milk glass bottle valued @ $175.00 plus.
4.  In my opinion, disregard Kovel's assessed values for selling or buying or you will find yourself giving it away and
    paying out the yin yang.
5. You've come to the right place, there is a veritable gold mine of valuable information from many knowledgeable
   collectors.
6. Good luck and feel free to post or mail me if  you have any other questions. Perhaps you'd like to trade yours for
mine plus cash, yours is a bit nicer.

The Rumford bottle in teal is worth about $10. Always be on the lookout for the emerald green Rumford that one is worth $200 to $300

Hi Milkglass

Thanks for your input. That's quite a collection you've got there. I never really appreciated milk glass until I came across this one. Sorry but I think I'll keep it. Got to watch my cashflow. I'm supposed to be selling these, not buying them (where have I heard that before?) LOL.

Clam
OMG, I hope your kidding! I just passed up an emerald green Rumford last week! It went for only $18 with shipping! For some reason I thought the teal version was a more unique color so I opted for it. Dang it!, just proves I need some re-education on this hobby. I think I'll just sit down in the corner and cry now. Aaaaargh!

I think perhaps my communication might have not been clear. I was offering to give you money and my bottle for yours.

Yeah, sorry about that. I was having a senior moment and misunderstood. I sent Milkglass an e-mail and we straightened it out.
