These are the forks that I have accumulated over digging. Was curious on age and value? If any. All of them have embossing on them, but one of which I can't make out at the moment. Three of them appear to have had some sort of red paint spilled on them. I can get some close ups if needed.

From left to right:
M.A. Lewis & Co.
National Nickel Silver
F. Curtis & Co.
National Nickel Silver
1881 Rogers A1
One unidentifiable

All of mine go to the scrap yard. Unless they are sterling which pays well. The plated stuff is junk.

So how do I tell which forks are plated and which are true silver?

Well usually the back side of the fork where its rather thin has the mfg and identifies either "plated" or "sterling", if it says ANYTHING "plated" its scrap. The inner part can be stainless, copper, or other non ferrous metals. The sterling will say "Sterling" on them or 925 (thats the finess of sterling silver). The scrap guy here gives brass scrap price for the plated junk (about 1.25-1.50/lb). If its attracted to a magnet he wont take the stuff. But other places will and just get steel scrap price ----better have a lot to make any $$

Ok, I tested them with a magnet, and none of them are attracted to it. I looked them over, and none of them say plated, sterling, or 925. They only say the company.

You can reat assured they are just plated then. Put them in with your brass scrap and you should get somewhere between 1.10-1.50lb for the scrap maybe more/less depending on commodity prices (copper usually has a determining factor on brass prices). I have a bag of about 10lbs of that stuff right now. Like to dig a bit more and drop off copper/brass/aluminum and stainless for $.

sterling is pretty easy to tell once you have dug one. You can just rinse themoff with water and they are all shiny.
Sterling wont have any brass/copper areas showing through.
The coffin handle one is the earliest style and it looks like they used it forever since the tines are worn down.

If you do find sterling you can ID it here..

They are not sterling, one may be nickle silver, the rest are plated with most of the plating gone. BTW nickle silver does not contain any silver, it just resembles sterling in apperance. The A1 on the Rodgers means it was single plated some will say double or triple plated.

That is a good site. unfortunately I have a Reed and Barton I just dug. It does appear silver and has a Patent of jan 30 1894. Looking at the site though theres no identification that its Sterling. They (R&B) made plated and sterling. The only real means is to acid test it. Which can be bought for just a few bucks on the net. I did find the link helpful though, thanks!

from what I have seen virtually all late american sterling silver flatware is either marked sterling or is hallmarked.
If its not, odds are its not silver.
