I did some scratchin around up a hollow today and found where I believe The "Erskine Glass Factory" did some dumping. I haven't figured out if these are lamp globes or lightning rod balls yet. I also picked up a 25 pound cullet or potstone. I also got a few other chunks and pieces in other colors. Altogether I found over 40 of these globes and 6 Hobnailed thingymajiggers. Also a Steubenville sodawater and some plastic dishes. One of the chunks of glass looks like it was a dish mold of some type that filled completely up with glass, instead of being hollow like it should have been.

This is a solid chunk of glass with a pattern on the outside... any ideas on why?

From what I have read the glassmakers sometimes filled metal molds with molten glass to heat the mold before beginning production. The solid piece was often just discarded.

Does anyone have an Idea on the globes? Are they lightning rod balls or are they lamp parts. They appear to me to be rod balls from all the ones I've seen taking down houses and barns. I've just never seen any that look just like these. They have ground openings on both ends.

Rod balls would make sense to me.  Hey, this post reminds me of one of my revisits I need to get right on.  Last winter I found an old glass works factory dump too...I picked up a backpack full of slag, but haven't found a market for it.  I've been waiting for winter to go back and explore some more.  Maybe my luck will be as good as yours and I can find some actual pieces.  Of course, I COULD go out and dig, too, since the ground isn't even close to frozen!

What years was this factory in operation? What were they supposed to have made?

Most rod balls that I have seen are solid. If the openings measure an inch and a half they are likely lamp parts. If so the are far more valuable that rod balls.

It appears one hole is 3/4" and the other is 5/8". The balls measure 4 3/16" from collar to collar. I would think because of the two slightly different sized openings that they may have slid down a taperred lightning rod. I need to get back there and get the rest of them because I didn't have enough room to carry them and the pot cullets all back the 1/2 mile to the car( the bucket weighed 50 lbs atleast!). I think there are still more balls there also.. Hey Josh and Shag I apologise I should have taken you over there to find the dump instead of wasting our time in the motherload yard. Who woulda guessed it woulda panned out this way. I'll put back a rodball for the both of ya though and promise ya a dig over there on your return trip.

Hey Dewdog,
Yeah, I'm going to seel all but a few. I'm just not sure what kind of a price to put on them. Any idea what one might be worth to you? I'm sure we can work something out. I'm pretty sure what glass house they came from but I don't want to advertise it here until I get the rest of the dump dug. Nothing personal but I've heard of a few instances where people have utilized info on here to go behind other people.
Joe, I'm free right now atleast until the 15th if you want to come down and scratch around.

Hey Zane,
Have no idea what they are worth--sure don't blame you for not saying where you are getting them. I guess it would be according to how many you come up with as to what they are worth. Give me a price and I can take it or leave it....mike
