Was poking around the University today where they were doing some trenching, and I found these Acid bottles. Most of them were the "Con Acid Nitric" bottles (Eight of them), but there was also a Hydrochloric and Sulphuric bottle in the mix. Most had stoppers. They look to be blown glass.

They are typically called reagent bottles.

do you know about what age they are? I would have thought older because the seams only go up to the shoulder.

Those Chem Lab bottles are really cool. Maybe not as old as you'd think but really cool.
You can easily fill a room with NaCl, CCl4, AgNO3 etc., etc,...

I have actually dug a couple of these type bottles out of TOC privies. But bet the design didn't change much before the 1960s.

Most of the earlier ones dont seem to have the chemical formula on them.
The same design has been used for quite a while so its hard to date them exactly.
Are they marked WT CO on the bottom or anything else?

Up to and into the 70's I'm sure and still today. I remember them in HS.
I think some things can't really be improved on so they continued. In this case a ground stopper is as good as it gets. Ground stoppers/bottles really can't be machine made automatically though it's been tried. Plastic did come into play but they're not as cool as those.

The large Sulphuric Acid is marked "T.C.W. Co. USA" All the others are are marked "M.B.W. USA" One of the Nitric Acid bottles is simply marked "Nitric Acid" with no chemical formula.

They were sitting next to the trenches they were digging on the hill where I had asked the construction guys to put any bottles they found. I think the rain from this weekend cleaned most of the mud off and I just finished them up in the bathroom with soap and water. You want one of the nitric bottles? :D

I saw bottles like that at my local antique store for $30 a peace, I don't remember the exact chemicals, but I earlyer saw the same bottles at the Goodwill for under $10 for 3 but turned them  away because I saw they where Wheaton's. than I picked up one sort of by accident at a big flea market a few weeks later it was on a shelf full of 1850s to 1950's bottles, I had looked at it but again ruled it out because of the word Wheaton, I was hot tired and hungry and grabbed it by mistake the one I found was from 1948. but it was worth what I payed for it and I'm glad I bought it even if by mistake.

I had seen in previous posts on the forum that bottles like Silver Nitrate Ag NO3 went for that much. As for the markings, the I thought the Wheaton marking was later along with no-solvit. I found that one of these nitric acid bottles I have is marked as "Phil Whitall Tatum co. Patent Mar 25 1878 New York" and at that time they were still being produced in Millville. Anybody know if that's a pre-cursor to the M.B.W. marking for the same company?

I use mine for home-made salad dressing. Really fun when you have company over for dinner.
