I dug for less than an hour at a 40's-50's dump today. I guess I've been spoiled by digging older stuff, I didn't feel like digging it much at all. Anyway, I got a cool Bennington marble that is older than the dump was. It's got a "pontil" typical of the 1890's marbles, and the flat unpainted end where they sat to dry. It is clearly hand rolled into a mostly round shape. All typical stuff, except for the fact that it has a face painted on it! Clearly intentional, there are two blue splotches with a white dot in the center, and below that, a blue splotch that is a mouth. I don't think this was an accident; maybe it was a German marble maker being funny? This thing saw some serious use. It's covered in little impact marks from other marbles. I bet a kid in the 40's got it from his dad, who used it in when he was a kid. Either way, I like it. I dug one just like it in my 1890's dump.
