Gorgeous amber repro historical flask - 6/13/2009 10:09:21 PM    franj   Posts: 29 Joined: 6/13/2009 Status: offline I acquired this beautiful amber historical flask at a swap meet in San Antonio many years ago. It's obviously either a reproduction or something maybe issued for the bicentennial of the town. The first clue is embossed on the back "American, Hand Made". I doubt it could have been something issued for the centennial of the town, Neither Japan, China or Korea were any threat to our economy back in 1887 and there would have been no need to indicate it was hand made in America. Still it is an absolutely gorgeous bottle. Open pontil, bubbly glass, thick mold lines with stretch marks on the neck and a hand formed top. This is certainly not a Wheaton product. This bottle puts their work to shame. It's embossed with "Historical Towne of Smithville NJ. 1787. Note the mis-spelling of town. Almost suggests something from the other side of the pond. However the back is embossed with "Clevenger Brothers Glass Wks. TM, Clayton, NJ." Any idea on the history of this bottle or what it might be worth. This all I could find out about Clevenger Brothers. Apparently they put some real craftsmanship into their work. CLEVENGER BROS. GLASS WKS. CLAYTON, NJ 08312 - EST 1929 Authentic early American glass, American hand made, mouth blown, hand-tooled fishied Shouth Jersey glass.  Each piece made individually one at a time by glass blowers who have given years of their lieves to retaining this fast disappearing art. Clevenger bros. glass is made in authentic 18th century style. Using formulas from the old original Moore Bros. Glass Wks. (circa 1880) which at that point of time in history the shade of color varied from batch to batch, so be it today at Clevenger Bros., including the impurities of yesteryear, bubbles, batrch stone and cord.  Clevenger Bros is the last "Green System" glass blowing shop of its kind in America, whose style of glass making is almost extinct.
