Got this in a box lot at an auction and I have no idea what it is. The top comes off. The butterflies wings move when liffted. The piece beside it looks like it fits in the top but it doesn't quite fit right. Bottom looks like you'd put sterno in it. Maybe a warmer???
Has anybody ever seen one of these? I love the thrill of a box lot. Especially when you don't know just what is in the box. It's like that feeling of having Cracker Jacks as a kid and the thrill of getting a prize in the box.Back then they were good. Does anyone know the feeling?

Hello Starburst,

More pictures please....what does the inside look like?
I seems like some kind of a serving dish ...prior to chaffing dishes, maybe?
Is it Brass? Very interesting!
Regards,

It looks like brass overlay on some kind of metal (aluminum). I put a creamer & sugar bowl in to show the size and maybe make you smile.

Here's the top with the butterflies. The Wings are moveable. I do think it may be some kind of warming dish but, I don't understand the next part. ~Stardust~

Hi Julie,
Good question, I just checked and there are no vents. This is kind of like 20 questions. Have you ever played the new electronic version of that game? It's a riot. You can go online and play it for free. The game cost about 20 bucks but it's a great ice breaker at a party. Try it out you'll be amazed. It's been a very long day. Only slept about 1 hour before the alarm went off. I'm so tired that I'm going to have to turn in real soon.Hope I can get some sleep tonight. If not you'll see me online with a little something I found today.
Have a good night all you bottle lovers!

Stardust,
I enjoyed your posts and pictures about your mystery object!!
Have you found out anything more about it?
I can't believe there weren't more guesses as to what it was used for!!
regards,

P.S. I hope you've caught up on your sleep and the MRI went well.

I looked in an old Sears Roebuck catalog(1902), saw a bread riser that looked similar, then my wife thought it might be a Moroccan piece, not sure, but I think it's a good bet it is food related. My guess is it is designed for cooking a particular dish, probably a particular cuisine also. Check food or cooking history books, collecting kitchen ware, etc. You might bring it to some chefs from  different restarants serving different cuisines or a cooking school if you have one nearby. There's also the web, of course. Butterflies and dragonflies were popular images during the art nouveau era.  I think the butterflies served as handles to lift the lid when it got hot. Pinch the wings together and lift? Good luck, I'm definitely curious.

I'll agree with Paul and Sears Roebuck. Pauls wife is most likely right in the foriegn part too. I don't think any of them would pull your leg.
Try it out Stardust if you find some directions.
