The only other cold painted glass item I found was a Civil War period canteen like bottle with an eagle stenciled on it. Could this be a store candy jar from the 1860's or 70's... The glass work is awesome... check that folded rim.

Hello springhead,

Welcome, and thanks for bringing this wonderful jar.

Might the paint be enameled? I'm gonna guess biscuits.

"In the late 19th century, animal-shaped cookies (or "biscuits" in British terminology) called "Animals" were imported from England to the United States. The demand for these crackers grew to the point that bakers began to produce them domestically. Stauffer’s Biscuit Company produced their first batch of animal crackers in 1871 in York, Pennsylvania.[1] Other domestic bakeries, including the Dozier-Weyl Cracker Company of St. Louis and the Holmes and Coutts Company of New York City, were the predecessors of the National Biscuit Company, today's "Nabisco Brands".
Animal biscuit crackers were made and distributed under the National Biscuit Company banner. In 1902, animal crackers officially became known as "Barnum's Animals" and evoked the familiar circus time theme. Later in 1902, the now-familiar box was designed for the Christmas season with the innovative idea of attaching a string to hang from the Christmas tree. Up until that time, crackers were generally only sold in bulk (the proverbial "cracker barrel") or in large tins. These small cartons, which retailed for five cents at the time of their release, were a big hit and are still sold today." From.

That is really interesting.... The jar may fall into the date range I had at first suspected circa 1910...

Thanks for that info Surfaceone!

It's not enameled but cold painted like some of the ceramic cookie jars you see from the 1930... There is quite a bit of paint loss. You would not have that with enamels which are fired on.

The jar you have is a free blown hand formed piece, it could be forign and of the period you suspect, but in that case the pontil is usually ground. I suspect you have an early American storage jar that was adapted for use, the lid not original to it...

Since it measures exactly 12" inches high with the lid... I suspect it is American with the original lid. I also think the painting is original and contemporary to the jar.

If you have a good reason to think differently you have not stated it.

The color of the lid and jar match EXACTLY... a near impossibility if the glass were from two different batches.

Hello Springhead. My only thought regarding your neat jar is, if it has a pontil, it has to be older than 1910.probably around 1840-1870. Some glasshouses were late in using the new technology so some pontils lasted into the 1870s. Unless of course maybe it is a reproduction jar......just thoughts.........Andy

Here's one I have. Jar is exact same as yours except my lid fits inside the Jar with no lap. Like yours my glass lid is a exact color match.

AND THIS!!!

Yes indeedy, springhead, that sealed it for me too.

It looked taller to me than 12 inches. The piece has tremendous presence to my eye.

Is there any stray letters in the painted balls? How'd you come upon this guy? There's stories in that there glass, and I wanna know em. Someone with far more than a modicum of artistry painted it. Can I get a closeup of the face, and where whiskers reach out for the ball, please?

Is it a heavy piece?

I don't see what Shirley temple has to do with jar, I must be missing something. The facts are in the pudding though, The technics used to make the jar were not being used here in 1900 excepting possible some art glass. The top could be original, the color looked off to me, but it wouldn't be unusual for the top to have been made earlier also. It just looks crude more like a 1920's piece of glass then the more refined pieces you see made earlier. My guess if the jar is made after 1900 is that it was made in eourope, and that being the case mass produced. I would likely pass on it in an antique store thinking just that. On the other hand if it is an earlier American jar adapted for use you have a one of a kind piece of folk art there... And does very much look like jars I have seen made in the 1850's or so...

I'll try to get more pics up... and ****yze the jar a little more if time permits. I'm doing Madison Bouckville NY antique show next week and have lots of prep work to do between my other job. The painting on the jar is certainly not an amateur job. I'm thinking the jars may have been purchased in bulk by a biscuit company and painted for the purpose of selling their product. As far as the pontil dating goes I think pontils lasted longer in these big jars. Size constrictions with the mold coming in to play. Though there were some specialized tools in use as evidenced by the turned lip.
