Hubby is heading off to a conference tomorrow and the kids will all be at summer jobs so it seemed like a good time to start pulling bottles down and giving them a good dusting.
I don't collect poisons themselves but these are all part of my apothecary collection and one has a veterinary label. The large one was a high school graduation present from friends of my parents. The only bottle I have ever received as a gift. I think the value of it today is probably close to what they paid for it in '76.

Nice bottles, the big one is striking but my eyes are drawn to the olive-ish bottle to the left of it. Either the lighting is off or it is of an unusual color for the type, as far as my limited experience goes.

On an unrelated note, do you know anything about the "Clayton's Dog Remedies" bottles from chicago? I also dug a "Dent's Dog Remedies" and couldn't find any info on it.

The one on the left is getting a bit of the shadow of the big blue one. It is a light emerald green with a touch of olive to it. I will try and get a better picture of the color when I have a chance.
I have a small wide mouth jar that is embossed with Clayton's Dog Remedies. I think there is also a small narrow mouthed bottle. Matt may have it on his website.
The Dent's I am not familiar with.. I seem to be having problems getting on Matt's site or I would check there.

Hey Plum,

Dent medicine co ran afoul of the Insecticide and Fungicide Board in 1914.

"Washington, D. C, December 1,1914.
137. Misbranding of "Dent's Manse Remedy." U. S. T. The Dent Medicine Co. Plea of euilty. Fine. $10. (I. & F. No. 249. Dom. No. 7470.)
On July 27, 1914, the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, acting upon the report of the Secretary of Agriculture, filed information in the District Court of the United States for said district against The Dent Medicine Co., Newburgh. N. Y., a corporation, alleging the shipment and delivery for shipment, from the State of New York into the State of Missouri, of a quantity of an article called "Dent's Mange Remedy," which was misbranded within the meaning of the Insecticide Act of 1910.

The article was contained in bottles labeled and branded as fo'lows: " Dr. Dent's Dog Remedies Dent's Mange Remedy [Representations of dogs' heads] Trade Mark * * * Price 50 Cents The Dent Medicine Co. Chicago. Directions. * * * Prepared Only By The Dent Medicine Co. Main and Office Laboratory Newburgh, N. Y. Chicago, 111. Toronto, Can." Each of the bottles containing the article was inclosed In a carton labeled and branded as follows: "Dent's Mange Remedy Dr. Dent's Dog Remedies Dent's Mange Remedy [Representations of dogs' heads] Trade Mark * * * Price 50 Cents The Dent Medicine Co. Chicago Dent's Mange Remedy • * * Guaranteed by the Dent Medicine Co., under the Insecticide Act of 1910. Serial No. 414."
Misbranding of the article was alleged in the information in that it was an insecticide other than Paris green and lend arsenate, and that it consisted partially of inert Kubstoi'ces, to wit, water and calcium sulphate, which substances do not prevent, des-troy, repel, or mitigate insects, and the names and the percentage amounts of each of said inert ingredients were not stated plainly and correctly on each of the labels on the packages containing the article, nor in lieu of the names and the percentage amounts of each of said inert ingredients were the names and the percentage amounts of each and every ingredient of the article having insecticidal properties and the total percentage of the Inert ingredients present in the article stated plainly and correctly, or at all, on each or any of the labels on the packages containing the article.

It was alleged in the information that the Dent Medicine Co., Newburgb, N. Y., sold and delivered the article on June 17, 1912. to the Kells Co., Newburgh, N. T.; that the Kells Co., on September 28, 1914, shipped and delivered the article from Newburgb, in the State of New York, to Kansas City, in the State of Missouri; that when so shipped and delivered for shipment by the Kells Co., the bottles and the contents and the labels thereof and the cartons Inclosing the bottles had not been altered in any manner whatsoever, and when shipped were intact and in the identical condition as when received by the Kells Co. from the Dent Medicine Co.; that the Dent Medicine Co., before the sale and delivery of the article to the Kells Co., affixed to each of the labels on the packages containing the article a guaranty as follows: "Guaranteed by The Dent Medicine Co., under the Insecticide Act of 1910. Serial No. 414;" and that the Dent Medicine Co., by reason of the sale and delivery of the article by it to the Kells Co., and the said guaranty, was amenable to the prosecutions, fines, and other penalties which would, but for said guaranty, attach in due course to the Kells Co.

On August 25, 1914, the defendant, the Dent Medicine Co., entered a plea of guilty, and the court imposed a fine of $10.

Carl Vrooman, Acting Secretary of Agriculture,
Washington, D. C, December 1,1914."

There's a 1902 Western Druggist ad here. A much larger ad with a list of their remedies is from The Dog Fancier, 1911.

You are right in your value statement.   Oddly enough the commons don't change value over the years.   The seem to be all common English poisons.  But even a sizable group of commons looks impressive, with diverse colors on display.  It's a nice looking group.  And as you can see, some English poisons get very large. I've seen a few even larger than that by many times.  They are the equivalent of  a master ink.  It would have been on the shelf of the Pharm or Chemist to fill smaller bottles with.  And because of this, they are largely in tact and have survived the years.

Yes, they are all English. They produced so many and for so long. You could probably have a very large and colorful English poison collection for a relatively low cost.
My folks friends knew that I had quite a few English apothecary bottles and that is why they gave me the large poison. I was very grateful. Most non-bottle folks are afraid to gift bottles. I am always telling my husband and kids that I would love to have bottles for birthdays and Christmas but they say they would not know what to get. I have told them I would be happy to point some out for them
