Hello All,

I have the bottle shown below. It stands 4 3/4" tall, 4 3/4" wide, about 2" thick, it has a purple tint. The bottle is very heavy in comparison. On one side of the bottle there's what looks to be a sandblasted area shaped like it might have been where a label or something went. The crown top is very heavy, looks maybe to be pewter? On the bottom there's a begining and ending of some writting but the middle in distinguishable. It starts, "PA.." (and what looks to be a D, not a T which is what I initially thought for PAT'D.) then ends, "..FF"

I'll post a few photos and see what you guys think.

Thanks, Lou :-)

Yes, it looks like a perfume bottle. Purple tint means pre-1914. If the top is ground, it would be even older, like pre-1910.

My first though, however uneducated it may be...
It reminds me of Crown Royal.

Kent/Angie,

Thanks for the feedback. I've looked in quite a few places and just assume it must be a bottle that was produced somewhere out of the country, maybe in Europe??? I'm attaching a photo with the cap off and from the photo you can see the small opening, like a cologne bottle, and maybe that's what it is. It's not ground so you're probably right, it's early 1900s. You can see the purple tint a little better in this photo from the top.

Thanks again, maybe I'll try another Board.

Lou ;-)

Hi Mynd, I don't reconize the bottle, but I do know the stopper. That stopper was and is still used by an English company that goes by the name ROYALL LYME LTD. , a cosmetic firm located in London. Below is a pic of three of there bottles and a close up of the stoppers. One matches yours and the others are earlier cork versions, where the little crown on top unscrews. Your bottle might very well be from the same company, not sure though. Hope this helps.
Rich.

Hi Lou!
Sorry for replying sooner.I KNEW I had seen that bottle before just took a few days to find it;

http://www.antique-bottles.net/forum/old_perfume_bottle/m_9863/tm.htm

There is another post that I remember,I think started by either Brian S. or David E. that I can't find.

Oh yes,Rich! You might want to have a closer look at the labels Royal Lyme is actually a Bermuda Company, headquartered in the Royal Naval Dockyard.(a freeport)Originally started by a German lady and now owned and run by a couple of Irishmen from County Clare,(About 60 miles from LONDONderry!) The owner and the manager are friends of mine and I asked about the stopper. They are mass produced in China and NOT exclusive to Royal Lyme. Here's a picture I took of a window display of their latest scent when it was launched last year;Royal Tangerine.

Hi Lou, yes I ID'd your bottle for someone else on the form, sometime back and provided a photo of it from an antique book I have. Here's the information.
'Nikki', an amethyst tint, scent bottle and stopper, made for Orloff, the handles molded in form of eagles 11.5cm high
Christie's $ 496.00.

WOW!!!!

What a surprise! Kat, Dave, Rich, thank you all so very much for the feedback and finding the info! You guys are awesome!!!

I started to do some searches on Royall Lyme and track down a collector in London somewhere through the net last night but didn't come accross anything quickly.

One thing I'm surprised about is the top, as heavy as it is I would have thought that is was made exclusively for someone. The other thing that puzzles me a little is I understand that the maganese that was used in bottles that turns them purple from ultraviolet rays was no longer used (supposively) after 1915. That is also mentioned in the Illustarted Guide To Collecting Bottles by Cecil Munsey 1970 that I have. The two E-Bay posts stated the bottles were 1939 and 1940 I believe. Maybe the same bottle was produced for several years, some with and some without maganese.......?

Anyway, thanks again everyone! I can see it's going to very difficult to come up with a bottle that is going to stump you guys. However, I still have a couple in my collection that have had me scratching my head for a while. I think my next post will be an embossed Bitters that I've not been able to find anything on.

Stay tuned!

Thanks, Lou

I have no problem,Lobey.Did you you realize you duplicated Ambly's link? That's all meant in my last post. And the prior post was to save Lou searching in the wrong place for info I know well.Neither was intended to cause offense, and if it did,I apologise.

Don't know if Lou should list his bottle on Ebay just yet-I notice the 1st bottle just realized a tenth of the Christie's auction,be interesting to see what the current one goes for.

KAT
