Basically what the title says. I'm pretty new and only casually collect old bottles I find, mainly by following old rock walls and hoping I have luck. I won't have the means to dig privies or anything like that anytime soon. I'm asking that out of curiosity and for advice. I live in a small town in Maine and there's plenty of old rock walls, but I've only found one wall with pre 1900s bottles. I've looked and can't find any old maps for where I live, so I'm basically aimlessly following rock walls (there's no shortage of them here). But for some reason I can't find another that has really old bottles. Does anyone have advice of what types of places I should look? I walk in the woods a lot anyway, so that doesn't bother me.
I also know of a small field where a farmhouse used to be with a rock wall on one side, but couldn't find anything.. I'm guessing there has to be something there.

You would want to try anywhere that has steep hills that is easy to get too by foot... what ever way you came in check oppisite side for glass/trash... also good spots could be stream/river banks

I can't believe it, but I found town maps of where I live (around 1000 people now) and the towns around it(less than that) from the 1870s, So now I know for sure what fields to look in

GDF baby... word

Most of us spend every waking minute we are not tide up in something else searching, researching walking talking knocking scouting and asking questions... then maybe .05% of that time digging a bottle!  There's no exact place to look, get to know how people thought back then, what they did in your area, its different everywhere... the more people in an area the more likely they threw bottles in ravines creeks and other areas that were not useful for building, farming, or livestock...

I live in a condensed farming area. I hike alot, so I'm always poking my head in the wooded areas and looking for unusual bumps and holes. Sometimes there's bottles and broken glass right on the surface...that wonderful tell-tale sign of something good to follow.

Look at google map satellite images for creeks and ravines near areas which have been settled for a good while, then hike the creeks and ravines looking for shards, clinkers, etc. It's worked for me many many times.

Lots of old dumps are near cemetery's so look near them, also if there is any small wooded area's in town, it may be a dump, look for area's in town that make you think, why didn't somone build something there, and sometimes it pays of with a new found digging area.

I would check and see if your area has a local historical society (most old towns do, and they also have access to Sanborn maps). They're usually a wealth of information. I can't add much more than what's been added. Lot's of hiking in the woods, along streams, rivers (a good time would be post a big rain, when the river recedes it will often wash away more dirt, exposing a possible dump), old farm property lines.

Adding to what Tom said, a lot of those types of properties may have no trespassing signs or private property. Proceed with caution, depending on your morals. Or if there's a house close by, just start knocking on doors and be honest. Tell them what you're looking for, and ask if it's OK to look around. Most people are willing to let you poke around if you're forthcoming and polite. Also avoids the tressie fines. hee hee.

I didn't read every comment so I dont know if anyone mentioned it,but we find  dumps by rivers and creeks. Back then people did not give a crap about polluting the woods or water ways, just as long as the trash and all the bottles were out of site.(out of site out of mind)
Towns and small villages had their favorite spot to dump, and they did so for many years until it was time to find another dumping ground.Sometimes these old river dumps extend right into the river itself. But unless your a certified diver, you will need a very long potato rake

Then you have the privy's.That's a whole other story

I just find someone digging good stuff and stick a GPS locator on the bottom of their truck. Saves a lot of time searching.

You aren't kidding. Even in the 80's my father-in-law was throwing stuff in the river and also burning highly toxic plastic. He's now a certified recycling hippie. Damn recyclers!!! There's no future in glass.

Well, I used to find 'em by sheer dumb luck. Now I'm learning the ways of the privy. My arms are sore from probing this 1850 house's yard, and I'm goin' back tomorrow! Wish me luck!
