From what the Yates County Genealogical & Historical Society was able to tell me this is likely from the Esther Bush bottling company at 24 Elm St in Penn Yan, NY as they had a listing for such a business in their 1881 directory:

Very, very nice bottle. Looks like a Lowell closure to me.

Tod's only got one bottle using that closure, and that's the one from the inventor... I'd say it's a good one. Also I'd email David Graci, writer of the book about soda and beer closures... stonebotle@aol.com

"Lowell Closure, circ: 1885-1890, Occurs on 1 bottle,
Invented by: George D. Corey,
American Patent: February 10, 1885, Number: 312,096,
The patent for this closure was assigned to Woods, Sherwood & Company of Lowell, Massachusetts. The stopper was based on the Lightning closure with a stopper that tightened to the bottle as it was twisted. The stopper is found on on a bottle marked "The Lowell Bottle Stopper.""

Might the HWP be for Henry W. Putnam, of Lightning jar fame?  He purchased the large mouth bottle rights to the Lightning stopper, while Karl Hutter purchased the small mouth rights.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I went ahead and sent David an email. Also the folks at the Yates County Genealogical & Historical Society said there are still decendents of that Bush family in the area so they are going to try and find out some additional information on this brewer or soda maker for me, as what was actually in the bottle may still be a mystery!

Mark is correct, that's definitely a Putnam base. Cool looking closure!

David Graci provided some additional information and details about this closure/bottle via email:

"An interesting use for this 'Champion Bottle Stopper' and one example I have never seen used before on a hutch bottle. It certainly wasn't meant to be used in that manner as in an ad it said; "This Stopper is adapted for Bottling Lager Beer, Ale, Porter, Etc." It was shown at a bottlers trade show in December of 1883, even before receiving its patent, which was assigned to George D.Corey on Feb.10, 1885. Marketing was controlled by the Lowell Stopper Co., of Lowell, Ma. I would say that the bottler may have gained permission for its use but probably used it without. Thanks for bringing it to my attention."

Everyone's insights into this has been much appreciated!
