Check this out. Has this ever happen to anyone else in the forum? I was pushing the shovel in when part of it broke off right under my foot!

I had heard about these guy that had tunneled under a road out of site digging last winter and when they went back the hole caved in on all their tools. Lucky it was just the tools that were in that hole when it came down. I wonder how many guys have actually been killed digging for old bottles?

Wow, that's pretty good!  I usually just break the handles off of bust the tines off the rakes.

Higher grade shovels are more prone to do that than the softer cheeper ones. The cold weather doesn't help either. I have had a few weired shovel breaks while digging foundations for hauses but the handle usually goes long before the blade when digging bottles.

It happens. I wear out the head in about a year on the cheaper shovels. I also have a problem with these new chinese made shovel heads that most of the companies are useing now. they tend to bend and split. I'd say on average I buy 2-3 shovels a year and usually have to make a new probe every year also they wear down. I'm not talking about the tip I'm talking about the probe shaft itself keeps getting shorter usuallu 6-8 inches after a heavy year of probing and digging. Then theres i don't know how many pairs of gloves i go through.

Its all those old ford pintos we are shipping to China as scrap. They are coming back to haunt us as substandard digging tools.

Fiberglass handles? I personally don’t like them at all. I stick with the old fashion wooden handles. The only fiberglass shovels I have used though have been craftsman and they break all the time. Yea, you can return them for a free one but in my opinion they are not as durable as wood. Also if you are digging in the rain, the fiberglass gets really slippery and it’s hard to get a firm grip. Because the handles are hollow, if a heavy rock falls on them lots of times they will split and crack.

By the way this was one of those fiberglass jobs... I broke the handle off of my "unbreakable" Fiberglass handled shovel a few weeks ago also. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what brand makes a light ( I stress the word light too) durable Spade?
