Applied lips had dug one of these last year and it was one of the weirdest things I ever saw...well, I dug one today in a toc dumpsite.  I'm on a jobsite where some footings are going in tomorrow, and there is a decent layer of coal ash and the usual debris, lots of toc bottles, I'll post some after a day or so.  Found some OK stuff, nothing too special, but I had to post this egg tonight.  Anybody know what these were for? Were they giveaways at fairs? Whatever they are, they're bizarre.  Now I'm in the egg club.

That is cool!

I found this thru google:

http://www.brierrose.com/images/eggbabe.jpg

Description of above:
This sassy little egg bay has the head and hands coming out the front and his bum can be seen on the reverse side!  The birthing egg originally came from England and was given by midwives to women in labor as something special to hold and squeeze during the birth. The eggs can be personalized with year and name.  These make wonderful shower gifts and look great from your Christmas tree or Easter tree.  Small hole in bottom allows for insertion of a christmas tree light to illuminate the ornament. May be ordered plain or with flowers on egg.   $12  ea plus shipping.

Can't find anything else, though.
I like yours better.

Kate

      Paul,

What I have found out since is similar to what Kate posted. They were to commerate a birth of baby hadn't heard the midwife story until now.A couple of other diggers have found one also.Mine is a little different with an African American baby but nearly the same. One, just like yours sold about a month ago and was listed as being attributed to Red Wing pottery. It sold for $200..Nice find.

Hey Doug, do you know what auction that egg was sold in?  I'd like to find out more about it. I researched Rookwood for eggs but couldn't find anything.  These eggs might be rare, do you think?
