I have a super rare scratch jug that has a circle crack about the size of your palm,  and it looks like someone maybe glued it back in a long time ago.  99.999999 percent of the jug is intact, but the crack drives me crazy.

This jug is so rare that it's the only one known by collectors in my area, and they say they haven't even heard of another one being around.  It's from a very small distillery that was bought out in 1906 and was given a new name after that.

My question is.

1)  Is it better to have the jug repaired, or leave it alone?

2) Are there people out there that do this for a living?  Because I won't let just anyone do it.  It has to be someone that knows what they're doing.

The stuff that I find on the net just tells you how to do it, and I would never take the chance of me screwing it up.

Please help!

I do not know wether is is better to fix it or not, I guess it depends on how much the crack bothers you.
There are for sure people who do this professionally. I do not know where you live, but there is a guy I use out of Toronto, Ontario who is VERY good at crockery repairs, as well as porcelain enamled signs. He fixes the spots, makes it the same texture, and airbrushes the area to match the colour of the glaze/crock. I am sure you can find someone in your area who does this.

I tried to send you a PM but the site wouldn't let me for some reason.

Anyway,  I think I have decided to leave it alone.  I mean it's a 120 years old,  it probably should be cracked.

Thanks, Chuck.

I'd get it repaired.  Repairs in pottery are considered totally legit and often restore the full value of the piece.  Is it a St Louis Jug?  Doesn't it annoy you when people say "so show me" after seeing your license plate?!  lol

there is a member on here named Doug, goes by appliedlips who is familiar with a lot of the collectors in your area and may be of some help with a local restoration artist...

Tigue710,

The jug is from a small railroad town near my home named Allenville MO.

The name on the jug is J.D. Dameron.  He started a distillery in 1892, but was bought out by John A. Withers in 1906.  Withers distillery is my favorite to collect, but when I ran across the Dameron jug I couldn't believe it.  Withers had a lot of money so he could do much more advertising with glasses, Jugs, and much more, but Dameron wasn't a wealthy man, so his items are harder to come by.

If  I could find someone local to look at it, I might consider having it repaired, but I just don't want to send the jug off anywhere.

Nice, I think I've been through there.  I used to live in St Louis...  and had my show me state license plates...

I e-mailed a guy who might be able to help you get a hold of someone local.
