I made it out digging for a couple hours after work today before it got dark. I didn't find anything too interesting, at least I don't think so. I found a Putnam Glass Works wax sealing fruit jar from Zanesville, a small Higgins ink from Brooklyn, Newyork, and a French Gloss from Massachussets (sp?) But here is the interesting thing. I tried to get a good picture of it. I believe it too be some kind of fossil, maybe a tooth?

Hi DiggerBryan,

Yes I think that is a coral fossil. Google images "fossil coral" or "cnidarians" and you will find similar pics and info. Think we used to find them in New Mexico and they are found in central US as well. Probably found most anywhere fossil corals are found. Hope this helps.

Hey Cliff, thanks for the quick reply. I think you are right about it being a coral fossil. I did a google search and some pictures look very similiar. Now my next question. Do you think someone tossed it in the dump or was it there naturally?

Hi Bryan,

If there is limestone bedrock anywhere around that area it probably weathered out of the bedrock. There is a lot of limestone in Ohio area. It looks waterworn on the surface so was probably carried a ways by water.

I'm really not sure. The dump I'm digging is right beside a creek. So the water wearing makes sense.

Hey Digger, check out this site.  Your fossil is more than likely about 350-500 million years old when Ohio was covered with seawater.  Good find.

That is a horn coral. You can use Google and find a lot of info on them. Its a pretty common type of fossil. I have found fossils, crystals, arrowheads, and other similar stuff in dumps. Kids picked up cool looking stuff off the ground back then just like they do now and it often ended up in the dump.

This threads opened my appetite for showing you some of my fossils. They were found on Thames shores.

First picture is from a kind of sea urchin I don't know the name. Sorry!

This might be the impression left by the club like shaped spine of another sea urchin, Tylocidaris.
