Good morning everyone...

Just came in from shovelling snow (15" worth) from our first storm of the season...
I have been practicing with the digital camera and took these photo's of this pottery I found in New Hampshire on April 22nd, 2005.

This item was lying in 55 feet of water, next to a mooring that I was cleaning/repairing. I only saw the outside edge and quite frankly, it looked like a rock because most of it was buried! I was able to see some of the ribs and I took a second look at it because it appeared to be man made. I carefully unburried it and brought it to the surface. I had about 5 feet of visibility at the time, so I didn't really know what I had until I broke the surface.

I have looked it up in some books and it appears to be an intact, complete Iberian olive jar from the late 1600's to early 1700's (1680 - 1710) my earliest piece! Actual Colonial artifact... These are pretty rare to find whole. Just think... we weren't even a country yet! Pre-revolutionary war relic... The early settlers were still fighting with the native American Indians!!!

and just one more...

When I brought it up, I handed it to my dive tender and he joked that he could buy one of these at "Pier One" and that it wasn't that old at all!! Obviously, he was quite mistaken...

Have a great day everyone,

Wayne

It never rains or snows underwater!

Hi Ron...

Yea, you don't find many of these whole.
A lot of shards and pieces have been found and several books have been written about them. I found this one listed in a book titled, "Pottery from Spanish Shipwrecks, 1500 to 1800" I forget the author, but it's an expensive book that I don't have in my collection yet. Never thought I'd find anything like this, let alone intact!

I'm looking for anyone that might be an expert in these types of artifacts. I'd like to find someone interested in it... maybe for a museum collection or something. Who knows, maybee it came off the Mayflower or something??? Ha...

Take care. Did you get much snow? We got a good 15 inches of the crap...

Take care, stay warm... sure is nice to be a member of this forum... I can't wait to meet some of you guys and gals!

Bearswede...

Hi Ron, thanks for getting me that info on the artifact site. I did check it out and I also sent the a few photographs of the piece. Hopefully, I'll hear back from them and be able to get more information about this find.

Thanks again,
Wayne

Bearswede...

Evening Ron... I sent a couple of inquiries out to two state museum curators today regarding the Iberian Olive Jar. I didn't get any response, so they either think I'm phony or they don't have the time to look into it for me... either way, I was thinking about throwing it on E-bay just to see what kind of interest there would be for such an artifact.

This piece really belongs in a museum! I dare not put it on display around my house, with the dog, my two boys and me dragging in diving gear and something new every week, let alone piling up firewood, it is bound to get broken...
