Hey all while rooting around in old site dating to the 1880's in Oakland, uncovered this object.

Just throwing this out there to see what some of you think it is. My only guess is that it's some type of sign ornament that would stick into the ground?

I'm bored and just felt like posting something

I think it's driven into a solid object and then a string, rope or wire could be strung thru it's opening to hold it up, like some sort of telegraph line or the like...

I'm not too sure about that Jim, the opening on the side is rather small so after the pipe is put thru the hole what's the purpose of the small opening ?

It's hinged, so it can be opened to fit something inside it, and then when closed, a wire is wrapped around the curly parts on the right side to keep it closed..

Well guys it looks to me like a support for a vertical section of vertical eaves trough drop  It was probably stretched open with a flat screwdriver to slip the pipe through it.  My guess it is an early Victorian period item.  RED Matthews

Te He Te He ! ! !     First time this year I have been right, if in fact I am. It is just a guess but seems plausible, I would use it so if I had a bunch of them. And afterall, we were asked to guess according to the RE:

Whatever it is, I think it's a neat object, I really enjoy and have a lot of similar stuff in my accumulations

I've only seen them used to hold old fashioned metal downspouts against buildings. Pound the spike into the wall, then it opens up at the hinge. Insert downspout, close it back shut, then wrap wire around the lugs.

beendiggin is correct. It is a gutter down spout bracket.

I wouldn't want anyone pounding that thing into the side of MY house. Wood siding would split BIG TIME.
I'm not saying it WASN'T used that way but that doesn't seem plausible to me.

That's why I figured it was for an earlier home construction.  RED Matthews

Yup, gutter downspout holdermabob. Those things are generally used in brick or stone structures and would have been mortared into the wall as the wall was being constructed. Similar, though smaller things were often used to anchor a lightning rod wire along the side of brick/stone buildings, often made of brass.

Now THAT makes a LOT of sense.
