I found an ink bottle and I don't know anything about it. It is unlabeled and there is no brand name. It has the number 8 on the bottom of it.

Square inks like that were used by many different ink companies. Yours appears to have turned a nice, natural sun-colored amethyst. That would date it in the early 1900s. Prior to World War 1, glassmakers used manganese in the glass batch to make natural aqua glass turn clear. Over the years, exposure to light will turn manganese glass clear bottles amethyst.

Beware of DARK purple bottles of that era, though. Some people use strong ultraviolet light to alter such bottles, giving a dark, funky and unnatural purple color. ~Jim

i'm wondering if some " creative " glass dealers have experimented with UV coloring of other types of bottles, not just purple. seems that as i peruse various auction sites, i see some very odd colors. could it be possible to color other shades of old glass using various coloring techniques??

I have seen some Coke bottles that were artificially turned a crappy, milky amber color. I don't know if they use the same technique as on the purple ones, but I think that's what it is. ~Jim

The Coca Cola bottles that I've seen over the years were  irradiated to produce the odd amber colors.  Many years ago, I knew a guy who was subjecting bottles to radiation.  I wonder what ever happened to him???  The amethyst bottles have been made amethyst by exposing to sunlight or a certain type of light source.

It is not altered by UV. I dug it up. I did not buy it from anybody.

Altered purple bottles look nothing like yours. They very dark. As previously stated, the light amethyst color in your ink has occurred naturally. ~Jim
