I've seen similar shenanigans . There is a local guy who for a $35 bottle will bid $1000 just so he won't have to try to bid at the last minute and for ego reasons can't stand to lose out on something he wants. For him, what's a few hundred bucks?? What has happened is that the other bidders get resentful and sick of losing out will run up the bid just to stick it to him. If they can't compete at that level, at least make him pay is their way of thinking.

As Gunther said it is a case of two people who wanted it and had the money to flame. I see it all the time . The economy is horrible but people with money still have it and this is a example of greed at it's best "gotta have that no matter the cost" .To each his own but I would not buy a cracked bottle unless it was dirt cheap like almost free and it was one from my area that I did not have. Cracked bottles are fillers I think at best. The resale on one is horrible no way to hide what it is a cracked bottle. Oh yes I know there are ways to hide/mask it but it is still something if you are honest you must reveal before you sell it and the price with the word crack starts to go down hill like fast or it would to me. bob

Hey, I think it's insane, but I think it's GREAT!

As someone who digs TOC dumps in NH all the time, I love selling my clear druggists on Ebay to get bottle money for something beautiful for my collection. So I have no criticism for guys bidding up a bottle, dont get me wrong :)

I just picture that if I dug this bottle, and sold it, thinking I'd get $5 if I was lucky, instead I would have got enough bottle money to buy myself a Success to the Railroad flask! Imagine that! It's nuts - but like I say, more power to em :) I would say to them " thank you so much for your bids! "

I think I'll head out to Contoocook today to go diggin :)

I dont normally buy damaged bottles either. An exception is bottles for research.
I just bought this one with a badly chipped top...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260293495111&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=016

Its the only one this size I have ever seen. I am trying to put together a small book on local bottles and this one is at least good for a photo. Worth 20 bucks to me anyway.

Hey Matt, that is a cool bottle for sure. I have bought bottle shards of rare bottles, and cracked bottles if I like them and want to be able to put them on the windowsill without worrying about the kids knocking them off.

Let me know if I can give you any info or pics for your book.

This may seem like an insane price to you but there is a good reason that you aren't aware of. So please just mind your own bussiness.

Thank you

Mr Willey

It is nice to have money to throw around! That is a nice bottle, but with a crack? That is a lot of money to pay for a cracked bottle. I happen to be friends with the guy that bought it. I personally wouldn't pay $20 for a cracked bottle, even if it were rare. A flea-bite or a small ding is one thing, but a crack takes almost all the value away.

Yes, $330 is a steep price for a damaged clear druggist. However, the buyer certainly did not buy this piece for resale (at least I hope he didn't). Being a collector of local bottles who values history over money, I can identify with him. I have a local citrate that is unique, and also has a huge crack and a bruised neck. I have refused $150 for this bottle, not because it wasn't a fair offer from a monetary view, but because it is a piece of local history that I dug myself, and it is very possible that I may never be able to get another one.  ~Jim

As I stated earlier, I am very good friends with the person who purchased that bottle. I am also good friends with the person who sold it. I will not mention names, and I don't want to speak for either of them. I will tell you this: That bottle is an EXTREMELY RARE druggist bottle. Being from NH I know this. I also know the collector who won the auction is a very dedicated collector of NH pharmacy/druggist bottles. He has the largest collection of NH druggists that I am aware of. If he paid $300 plus for a damaged bottle, there was a reason. I personally would not pay $20 for a rare bottle if cracked. A small ding or chip is one thing but a crack, no way! I can, however, understand where he is comming from. He may not see another for a long time. We all like what we collect and some are downright crazy for what we collect. For some of us, it is what brings balance into our world. Please don't fault the guy for his passion for collecting. Hey, NH druggist get good money! Put some on ebay and maybe he will pay that for one you put up!

Uhh, did you read my post?? Fault him for his passion? No way. I said that I can identify with him, as I am the same kind of collector. I hope to never have to pay $300+ for a local druggist, but if the opportunity came up and that is what it took, I would do it (provided I had the extra cash at the time).

As far as eBay, it can drop off the face of the earth. My duplicate local druggists (the few I get) go to the historical society museum. ~Jim

If people want to shell out big bucks for local bottles, more power to them.
Better than spending it at Las Vegas gambling I guess.
I always hope for people to bid crazy on my auction bottles it just doesnt happen often enough.

Yes...I read your post. I was not trying to be abrasive in any way. Seems to me, we both agree that people who love what they collect will go the extra mile to get it. I, personally would not have paid that for a damaged specimen (even if rare) but he obviously wanted it for his collection. I cannot fault him for that.

hahahahaha! I agree 100% Matt. Everyone gets upset when they get outbid on a good bottle, but they are happy when a bottle they list goes crazy! We live in a world of Hypocrisy.

Just my two cents but not sure that is true - if I am outbid at an auction I will (always) congratulate the buyer, understanding that they quite simply valued the object more than I.  More power to 'em!  At the same time, one of the many reasons I no longer sell on eBay is that I DO NOT enjoy having someone pay "too much" for an item.  The antique business is my livelihood and I fully understand that a bidder who pays "too much" for an item will blame me rather than accept responsibility.  And  understandably, when this comes to their attention, they will never buy from me again.  As as a result, I prefer to market objects at a set price to which I can feel comfortable, for our future within this hobby/business is based upon trust.  Again, not saying I am "right" but I do not believe that all buyers/sellers/collectors can be categorized as "hypocrites."
