Is this even an insulator??  I know its a little beat up but the good news is there might be more I just picked it up off the top of a box

 I believe they were used back when everybody used radios for entertainment. They would connect a series of wires or cable together for a better signal. They were used in that way and also I believe HAM radio operators used them on there atennas.

Pretty much as a guy wire of sorts in some/most cases. They were used on antennas alot.

They were used to prevent lightning from travaling From point "A" to point "B" through guy wires, stays and any other wire you wanted insulated. They were also used with a spring between two of them to provide insulation and tenison on a wire.
