I could use some help identifying this odd pitcher. I bought it from a thrift shop - they didn't know what it was, either!  It looks like some sort of late 19th or early 20th century lemonade or tea pitcher. The inset probably held ice.

It stands about 12" tall, not counting the finial, and is 5" in diameter. The metal around the lid looks oxidized but the inside is still fairly shiny. No marks of any kind that I can see anywhere on this piece.
Hopefully you can tell by the photograph that there's a distinct pattern to the glass - a series of somewhat wavy, rectangular squares.

It's totally cool in a mad-scientist kind of way, but I would like to know what it is. Any ideas?

That was my first thought! But the person at the thrift shop suggested that it might be some kind of prototype tea pitcher. If it does have a scientific application, I have no idea what it might be.

I see no obvious signs of pontilling, but again, I'm a newbie at such things, so I am going to include photos of both the bottom of the pitcher and the bottom of the inset piece. As for the copper question, it doesn't appear to be, but not sure how I could tell. I'm also going to include a photo of the top of the pitcher with the lid closed and one with the lid open. Hooray for digital cameras!

I don't know how to tell if it's lead glass. Any tips for identifying copper metal and/or leaded glass?

Here is a photo of the bottom of the inset - the only mark visible to me is a small, straight line about 1/2" long.

Top of pitcher, lid open, showing the top of the inset piece. The inset has a screw lid with a cross hatch pattern on the side of the lid. It looks like silver, but there is no marking identifying as such.

One final photo, just because I like it. When I was trying to get a photo of the bottom of the pitcher, I noticed that there was a small piece of red paper on the table underneath. I removed the paper for the next shot, but when I was browsing the photos, thought this one was interesting. It also shows something of the wavy pattern, and why I like this pitcher so much. Even if I never find out what it is, where it was made, etc., I appreciate the opportunity to share my find with you!

IT IS NOT PONTILED.AS FOR COPPER LOOKS LIKE MIGHT JUST BE COPPER COATED AS I SEE SOME OF THE"COPPER"? HAS WORN OFF AND I GUESS IT IS SOME BASE METAL.[WHAT, I DON'T KNOW,BUT WOULDN"T ADVISE USING IT AS IT COULD BE LEAD. ALL I KNOW ABOUT LEAD GLASS IS IT IS HEAVY COMPARED TO OTHER GLASS ITEMS THE SAME SIZE. I SURE AIN'T NO EXPERT ON ANY THING I HAVE SAID ,JUST EXPLORING WITH YOU TO GET MAYBE AN IDEA OF WHAT IT IS. FROM LOOKING AT THE TOP WITH THE HINGE AND ALL ,LOOKS LIKE IT HAS SOME AGE TO IT. MAYBE SOME ONE ELSE CAN HELP US AS I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT IT TOO.

Ah - interesting possibility. Antique Sangria pitcher? I just  tested the seal by adding water and turning the pitcher on its side. I can safely say that it's not a tight seal.

Time for another picture clue: the inside of the spout.... looks like a strainer of some kind.
