I found this just lying on the surface, I live in the Motherlode area of Northern CA,
It is very rusty, but looks like a bottle opener, can anyone help identify this?

It appears to be a piece of hardware that had a grooved shaft through it. The 'tab' in the circular opening looks to be the 'key' that fit the groove in the shaft. If it was an opener, I would expect the 'tab' to be on the 'handle' side of the opening, as that's where the leverage occurs. Just a guess.

I thought maybe the two holes in the middle of it where to attach some kind of a wooden handle of some sort and the hole at the bottom may have been there to hang it on a wall.

That makes sense, but now you have me thinking that it was a handle that turned a grooved shaft. What kind of metal does it appear to be of?

I'm stumped, what else was in the environs where you found it? Hinges, rotted wood etc? This why I have a crate full of all kinds of unidentified metal objects found while bottle mining.

I was just out for a walk, it was lying beside the road, in the middle of the old downtown area of Foresthill CA. They are restoring an old pharmacy just about 50 feet from where I found it.

Is there more than one Forest Hills in California? I checked the website for the Foresthill Bridge (NICE), and the surroundings appeared to be highland desert-like. I thought Forest Hills CA., was a city.

I think I have found the answer to my query as I read my response - FOREST HILL not FOREST HILLS

Man that thing is driving me insane! ! I know i've seen one of those somewhere. I'll start pulling the cellar apart tomorrow. I hope it doesn't come to me in the middle of the night, cuz the last time i ran down those stairs in the dark i almost broke a toe off.

i know exactly what this is.trust me, ive handled hundreds of these! it is a reflector bracket mount to an older bicycle. this would of been for the front reflector. the large hole would of slid over the fork tube.the protruding "key" in the hole fit in a slot on the fork tube. the mount was originally bent at 90 degrees just behind the 2 small holes.you can just see the crease in the picture.the actual reflector was mounted on the 2 holes.

i was only able to find some examples of newer examples. still basically made the same way as the old ones.there are sooo many variations but all do basically the same thing.the reflector hole pattern (the 2 small holes at end) may vary from model to model.but the keyed fork hole is the same. yours was a basic simple design as all the old ones were. the newer ones have special bends and forms to make a little stronger.see the 4 pics. they should speak for themselves.i can only post one pic per message.
