Is this a small ink.  The bottle measures 1 5/8 inches high and 1 3/4 inches at its widest.

Looks like it might be a stopper for something. Appears decorated on the bottom (top)?

thought of that.....what about the way the lip rolls out by the opening.  Plus there are no wear marks on the outside where it would of rubbed on the bottle.

The newer stoppers have a platic insert that goes over the end and works like a cork. Just my thoughts.

It could be.  It was in a box of Ink bottles and wrapped in newspaper from May of 1969.   The gentleman that owned the bottles was a digger and passed away a few years ago.  I received all the bottles he had boxed in the top of his garage because nobody wanted to go up and get them.  The boxes were falling apart ( almost 39 years)  so it took me a while to rebox them.  Most everything is from the 1890's to the 1950's.  I will be selling almost all of them.  Not for profit, but so they can be preserved and admired by someone that will enjoy them.  I am just looking to recoup some money for my time spent.  The ones that can't be sold to collectors I will do something with them.  They will not go back into a dump.....at least I won't send them there.

I have to agree with woody on that one.  There is one other thing it could be a perfume or cologne bottle with all the fancy detail on it.

bottom cut, nicely decorated for the underneath. A bottle stopper of some sort?

One reason i think that looks like a stopper is many stoppers have those divits on the edges to give a better grip.

Most stoppers I've seen aren't hollow, like that.

I've dug inkwells like yours, Richard.

I've got them somewhere in my shed, but I'll have to wait for it to thaw out somebefore I can get to it.

The second picture looks like a door knob, I thought.

I wasnt saying it was a stopper because it was decorated on the bottom, I just asked the question if it was. They posted the second photo at the same time I posted the question. It could be an ink but it doesnt look quite right to me. But then I'm not an ink collecter.

That recess under the lip is odd. If it is an ink its a very late one that used a cap of some sort.
