I have a Philly pontiled druggist in an odd shade of amber. I'm not sure it is natural. I only paid what I would have if it were aqua but have been curious. I know I have read where newer clear bottles with Selenium will turn amberish when exposed to UV light. I did not know if a pontil era bottle could contain Selenium. I have seen a bottle that was coated that enhanced it's color. Could this be coated some how? When I hold it to the light just right I can see a little greenish I think. Could something really cover the natural color. Does anyone know a way to test it?

Hey James,

I dunno, looks kinda like ginger ale to me, with a hint of isabelline lutecence.

Is that it for the pictures? Are'ya gonna show other views? Maybe walk it outside for some fresh air and sun.

I"m guessing that's natural. I haven't seen an altered bottle in that color, nor have I seen many pontils that have been color altered. Of course, I'm no expert in color altering. Most of the ones out there are the clear 1870-1910 era bottles, that have the right element in them for altering, and they usually alter to amethyst.

If it's the real deal, that color HAS to add value.

try scratching it off with a razor blade. if its stained it will come off.
Its probably an aqua bottle that got some olive glass contamination (which makes it more interesting in my mind).
Doesnt look like selenium tint and its too early.

I think it must have a coating of some kind. I get a little something coming off when scratching. The color still looked similar under though just cloudier. It was hard to remove. I will see if I can soak it in something. I would love for it to be a color other than aqua, but I will not hold my breath. The other bottle I bought years ago was coated with something that made it less cloudy and enhanced its existing color. Not sure if this is something similar. I had not noticed the other bottle, a pontiled soda, was coated until I had left it in a window for a few years. The heat must have made the coating start to come off. Here is a side shot. Not sure you can really see the spots though.

It appears that the druggist bottle has some gummy residue of evaporated turpentine inside of it. Soak it in some acetone and you'll remove the contents and likely whatever coating was applied (if one was applied) as well.

It looks like some evaporated contents in the better lighted photos.
If you want to clean it I have found carburetor spray cleaner will remove most ex-contents...just make sure you use it outdoors.

That's some good stuff right there. If you want the best impromptu flame-thrower then the CRC carb/choke cleaner is my 1st choice. You'll get a good 5 to 6 foot jet of flame using them thar cans. It is also recommended that this be done outside.

If it's content stain dip it in some acid and it should clean up nice.  I see hints of aqua.

It appears to me to be a light green with a yellowish content deposit or residue, from what i'm seeing on my comp anyhow.

Is that a Cairns?
