I have a chance to dive in an area of the James River in Virginia along side of a plowed area that I have found in the past with a metal detector, items dating form the late 17th century on up to the early 20th century. It is quite possble that the water has bottles from these periods also. I am not allowed to use a metal detector in the fields anymore but the owner said that I can use their property for access to the water. Here's my question. I have recently talked to a friend who did acheological work in the James River years ago when it was full of Kepone. Because Kepone lasts a long time in the water, how safe would it be to dive for bottles?

The area that I would be diving in is upstream from Hopewell which is where Allied Chemical dumped Kepone into the River. I was told however that Kepone was used in the making of paper and the paper mills are upstream from where I would be diving. I agree that drinking the water would be more harmful but Kepone could also get into the body through the skin which is the largest organ in the body. Still makes me a little uneasy knowing of the potential dangers. Sort of like knowing that a Black Widow spider was found in my son's sandbox.

Wow....food for thought! I'm glad as a nation we've gotten away from those horrible practices for the most part. It makes me shudder, I was a teenager during the 70's and remember pawing through some kind of purple gel, to find reject lighter casings from the best known lighter Co. in the U.S. (Their picnic tables for employee breaks now sit at that spot) I also remember old timers burning piles of tires and wire to melt the insulation off for resale of the copper. What a legacy! The line in the story that made me cringe was about new sediment covering the old Kepone ....Not sure about that either.
