I'm leaving the swamp dig for a while and looking for an older dump.  You can see from the pic that this dump is overgrown  with kudzu.

I only have a couple of hours so I'll have to try and hit a good spot to dig.  I find a broken chero-cola on top of the ground.  So I'll try this spot.

I've been digging about 30 minutes and have only found a few broken bottles.  Then the french's with the 1915 patent date is found.

A few minutes later I find this handle.  I have to dig a larger hole to see what it is attached to.

Turns out to be the crank of on old ice cream churn.  May take it home to see if it will clean up.

Close to four feet deep I have water seeping into the hole.  This dig is on a slope that goes into a cypress wet weather area.  Hopefully this is getting close to the original trash layer.

Hopefully you can see the different layers in the hole.  The rusty layers are usually the best to find bottles.

Finally I find the sandy layer, which is usually the very bottom.  And there they are lying on their sides, side by side in the mud.

I have to leave, but I have a bucket of bottles and a good starter hole going.  I'll post the pics when I get this stuff cleaned up.  Here is the hole after 2 hours of digging.  Not bad for a 56 year old.

Yeah that's some nasty stuff. We don't have that yet. Keep it down there.

Clean those bottles up and lets get a look at them. Keep digging. The good stuff is yet to come.

Joel

Yes Julie and Joel,  That is some bad stuff.  Right now it's in the dormant state and only the vines are showing.  Come spring all you will be able to see is leaves covering everything.  And I don't walk where I can't see the ground in the summer.

The dump is appearing to be toc to twenties.  I'll try to get some pics posted tommorow.

Bevyn, I live in Georgia, south of Augusta.

It must be nice to not have to use a pick axe to get through the icy dirt! When I retire someday I'm gonna buy a dumpsite down south to dig in the winters.

Come on down Zane, There's plenty of dumps to dig and you can dig year round.  We just don't have the abundance of great bottles like you guys up North do.  They recycled everything to the point of no use down here.  That great 1860's stuff is hard to locate.

Pic of Sunday's finds.  Not great but it will help identify the age of the dump.
This group includes.

2 Aqua beers (unembossed)
Chero Cola - Waynesboro Ga.
3  Large P J Ritters- Owens mark on base
2  Small P J Ritters - Owens mark on base
Large Snuff
Small Snuff
Dark Green Lime Cola (crack in lip)
It's French's - Patd Feb 23 15 on base abm
Aqua/green Pickle? - Illinois mark on base abm
H J Heinz- # 431 on base
H J Heinz - #131 on base
2 Small food - cherries?
Pepper sauce
E R Durkee
Pond's milk glass
Mum Mfg. Co.
Chemical/Medicine -1912 on base

Here's a pic of the four that were side by side on the very bottom. Two toc beers, a Chero-Cola and a Bimal  sealed chemical/med. bottle.

The Chero Cola is in near mint condition.  No stains or sick glass on this one.  It looks like one of those that have been tumbled.
