Does anyone know how to get a label off of a bottle without destroying it?

I would think soaking it in water would work well. Labels come off new beer bottles and mayonnaise jar very nicely after being in water a while. Don’t see why it wouldn’t work on old ones as well.

Experience talking here...old labels will often simply dissolve in plain ol water...just a warning it could get ugly.

Thanks for the info. I got the label off without damage.

Two questions:
1) Why would one want to remove an original label from the bottle?
2) How did you get the label off without damaging the label?

I try to keep everything as is, except to remove dirt/content residue from the glass.

It's funny you post this.. I had to get a lable off a bottle for a friend who wanted the label but not the bottle.  If you heat the label carefully with a hair dryer the glue loosens and you can sometimes get it to come off whole that way.. but that's on a newer bottle not an older one.

i tended to leave old labels in place..      but i can see where some might want to put a copy of old labels on bottles simply for displays not to fool potential buyers.. i've thought about copies of labels on old pepsi bottles that i've gotten with the missing paper labels..

One guy I met purposely removes old labels from beer bottles because he says he sells a label on ebay for a lot more than the labeled bottle.

I have a friend who say he has steamed labels off bottles without damaging them. I saw a clear Dr. Perice bottle with a really nice full label and would love to put it on a dark aqua one. I may give it a try and see if it works. Im sure success depends on how you go about it.
