Hello All:

Lobey got me thinking the other day about whittled bottles.  Two of these were dug local.  So lets see some of those whittled bottles folks.  Here are four that I have.

C Congress Water Pint.  I haven't yet found the best way to take pics of em.  Sometimes with low light behind, other times with tons of sunlight.  Difficult aint it.  Just looking for some of those great pics everyone takes.

hi folks
just wondering when you people say whittled bottles what do you mean ? i see the bottles in the pictures and they have a whittled appearence but why ? was it because they whittled the bottles when hot or was it how they made the molds by whittling? or is that just simply the style these bottles are
thanks
Ian

Hey Ian, "whittle is from improper mold heating.  In the morning when the shop opened especially in the winter the molds were supposed to be warmed up before use.  Often they were not and when the hot glass hit the cold mold it created the whittle effect in the glass.

the old timers coined the term whittle because they thought the bottles had been blown in a wooden mold.  They thought the "whittle" was actually whittle from the carved surface of a new mold before it was burnt smooth by use.  Now we know a wooden mold would of burnt up so quick it was not often used.... if ever!

Thanks for the "eye candy"  Gof I love those whittled pieces.  Bear, Cap, etc must have some pics around.  It just adds another element to the bottle.  Such as bottle, type, color, and whittle.  Thanks applied, Road....
excellent pieces.  Just amazing.
WoW Tigue:  Thats what I thought about the wooden mold.  Thanks for the info.  Know I won't be telling people the wrong thing.  I should talk to you more often.  I will send ya a pic of that bottle today.

Great pictures, everyone!  I think it is very difficult to capture the whittled appearance in photos.    Any suggestions??

Another question....  if whittled appearance is caused by cold molds in the morning, then why are there some bottles, for example the Oak Orchard Acid Springs bottles, that all seem to be whittled top to bottom??? Almost every example I have in different color variants is completely whittled.

A lot of the mountain glass Saratogas are very whittled - this quart G.W. Weston, shoulder embossed, is completely whittled....
