Lockport or the Cleveland glass works, Large hat whimsy. - 6/22/2011 10:16:02 AM    Steve/sewell Posts: 4292 Joined: 1/23/2010 Status: offline The bright greens in the glass products associated with each of these two works has me somewhat convinced this hat was made at either of the two places.The hat was found in Shooktown which is very close to Lockport and not to far at all from Cleveland.It is large by standards of comparison to similar ones made at other glass works as it stands 4 and a half inches tall by 6 and a half inches long by 4 and a half inches wide.There is a rough pontil plenty of base wear and very small potstones located in a lot of the glass.The hat dates from the 1840 to 1860 period as the style of these hats was changing beginning in 1840 to a taller top hat look.It was made using a bottle mold and is pretty symmetrical in all facets.The color is the prettiest shade of emerald green imaginable.Other then the base wear there are no issues with the piece.
