Those long necks on the square ones just don't seem to clean inside.  Even after 2-3 weeks, they are hazy.  Just not enough action in that tiny area.
Are there any new ideas out there?

Hi Slcholt,
Yes, they can be a pain to get cleaned. Rectangles or squares alone can be also hard to clean.
You might have too much or not enough copper in the neck area. The first will clog the neck and the second willl do nothing. In a perfect world, you would have just enough copper to barely fill the neck area. When you fill the bottle, turn it on its side and make sure you have just enough copper (no more than a third) to cover the entire neck area. Make sure that enough water is being added, the same amount as the copper.
How are your RPM's. For that shape of bottle, the slower the better (35 RPM's at the most).
Is your tumbler level? Are you putting the bottle in the canister level.
If all fails, I have even offset my bottles in the canister to be tumbled at an angle to reach a certian area of the bottle. This is usually the neck area that is requiring special attention, I load my copper sparely, not to clog the angled neck. Another way to offset your canister is but a slip on PVC connecter, buy the correct size for you canister. Put the slip connecter on the end where the base of your bottle is. That way your neck is pointed downward.
I am sure there are more methods for cleaning your neck area, but these have helped me with great success. Necks can be a real pain to clean.
I hope this helps, if not, then put up another post on the forum.

I'm not sure I understand the slip connector.   Sounds interesting.  Do you have a photo?
Have you tried tumbling end over end Vertical instead of horizontal?

Hi Slcholt,
The slip connecter is called a slip coupling. Where you can buy PVC pipe, they will have it. Its simply a slip coupling that connects two pieces of pipe together. Take your canister with you to the store where you are buying the slip coupling, make sure that it fits the canister. If they have different thickness of the slip coupling, buy the thinest one.
No, I haven't ever tumbled end over end, nor have I heard of anyone doing it. However, if anyone or you have done it this way, please tell us your results.
By the way, nice pictures and tumbling. From looking at your pictures, I would try putting less copper, just barely enough into the neck area.
What RPM's are you running your motor at?  How long are you running your bottles on the polish tumble? Are you using a cutting oxide as pre clean up prior to polishing?

I take about 2 weeks on the squares.  The first week in the cutter and the next week polishing. Then I put them in a separate PVC to just tumble the inside for another week.  It's possible that it is not completely level.  I'll be more careful to make sure it's not too full.
I have the JarDoc system so the speed should be fine.  I have heard of tumbling the small ones end over end but it's hard to find anything that will hold the larger ones.
We need to invent it!
Thanks for the help.  I'll try these for another week with your suggestions!

Hey Rick,
What type of machine do you have that will tumble a canister end over end. Please, explain how this works because I am very interested in this concept.

I saw one in action and I have conversed with Paul a bit Via email but that in all. He uses them to clean stuff you camt clean with a normal tumbler. He  redoes marbles too.

Hi Warren,
I saw pictures of the machine (both small & large) they look they would work for the insides of a bottle.
However, Rick posted that he has one of his machines and the canister as well. That having a canister may mean that it also does the outside. Rick hasn't answered my post , so I don't know.
My attempt at emailing failed as I said to you in an earlier email, so I'll call him.

Hey Pono, Here is a picture of one of his end over end tumblers, canister and all.
I have talked to a few folks that have had things done by him and they only have good things to say. If you look at all the little thumb nail pic on his web site you will see some amazing things. The guy never stops.

If you email Paul Nolton he will get back to you. he may not do it today but he will eventually get back to you. He travles alot repairing glass at shows .

Howsit Warren,
My email wouldn't send , it came back.
So, I'll have to try and call him.
I contract tumbling and restoring bottles for the state and this machine looks like it would be much faster than what I have to go through with Hawaiian whiskeys (long necks).

That is a pretty cool machine.  I think it's the next step in tumbling.  I want someone to invent one that will do multiple bottles.  Maybe a ferris wheel type that would hold multiples securely.  In any case, this is what we need!  Great design!

This machine must tumble at a very low RPM inless the canisters are somehow compensating for the way the machine tumbles. A bottle that is set vertically will be impacted with the copper much differently than being in a horizontal position. In the horizontal position the copper flows more evenly with the shape of the bottle.
So far, I haven't been able to contact the person who made this vertical tumbler. Hopefully, I will by phone.
Thanks to everyone who has given me ways to contact him. I'll keep trying to reach him.
A machine that would do more than one canister at a time would have to be able to stack them side by side.  Maybe, by dividing the main driving rod in half, you could then stack cansiters side by side on each side to evenly distribute the weight with the motor in the middle possibly below or in front or back of the machine. That would be my guess.
I wonder what size motor is used, motor RPM's, pulley sizes and what size bottles it could tumble?
