Hi all,

I hope someone can help point me in the right direction.

I'm making a medicine chest style cabinet to be used as a drinks cocktail cabinet of all things! This is a curiosity/arty type piece and a bit of fun.

I need to source some clean (as they will hold various spirits - traces of old poisons wouldn't be good!), preferably new/reproduction apothecary/medicine chest style bottles to go in it.

I'll need clear glass with cork or preferably ground glass stoppers. We plan to add our own labels and distress the bottles to make them look the part.

These links show exactly the type of bottles I'm after:

I could also go with a chemist round style bottle if this style isn't available.

I'll need probably 15-20 or so and possibly a couple of sizes - probably 250ml to 500ml content size. Square type is best.

So, does anyone know if this type of bottle is produced as a reproduction anywhere? I'm in the UK, so UK suppliers would be even better.

many thanks,

Paul.

I would suggest looking at the US eBay Apothecary/Pharmaceutical section, as well as the laboratory glassware category, as I have seen people offering lots of many unused old stock glass stoppered bottles for a decent price. Repros or similarly styled new bottles are most likely available, but old bottles are the way to go!

Also, I would suggest implementing old and used apothecary bottles since they are readily purchased on ebay. A soak in denatured alcohol and then perhaps acetone would certainly dissolve away any traces of whatever might be left behind. Chances are that the bottles would not have held poison (probably beneficial stuff), and even if they did, the minute amounts remaining even before a thorough washing with good solvents would probably do nothing. Just because it may have once held a bunch of tropane alkaloids there is no reason to believe that the intelligently cleaned bottle will pose any harm, unless you are a follower of the more unfounded aspects of homeopathic medicine and think that a singular molecule of the chemical in a liter of liquid will have an effect.

Your project sounds awesome, but to make it truly spectacular you should go with bottles as old as the ones you provided links to!
