HELLO, does anybody know what this was used for and what it might be worth to somebody. it was dug up in CANTON, OHIO, next to the timken bearing plant.
is this a cone top bottle or what classification is it. any responses greatly appreciated. THANK YOU, ceasley_99@yahoo.com

I have not seen one before but here is my 2c worth. I think this was after 1900 say 1920s. Metric Metal Works was located in Erie, Pennsylvania and was (I think) part of the American Meter Company, involved in the distribution of natural gas. I assume that the metering of gas in the 1920s involved pressure monitoring with a mercury manometer and that these would have to be ' topped up' from time to time.

Nice find and welcome to Antique-Bottles.Net !

thank you for your reply roger, does that mean this was part of a manometer.
this was dug up on an old pipeline right of way. we came thru laying a new 24 " line in 95' . i was working tie-ins watching the hoe dig when i saw the cone-top poking out of the backfill pile where he was dumping. i' ve found numerous bottles over the years, but this one was the odd one i' ve found. any ideas on a classification for this type of bottle and/or value. thanks again, ceasley

No I don' t think it was part of the manometer - just a container for the mercury and it was taken from place to place topping up the manometers, maybe.

I am hoping someone more knowledgeable will answer your question on classification and value.

Hi. I occasionally see these little jugs at flea markets, etc., but only with " mercury" printed on them...no company name. They' re neat little jugs but, unfortunately, don' t bring a lot of mioney. My guess...$5 to $10 without the company name, a little more with the name? Sometimes a name like that can make two people from the object' s local area get into a bidding war, so who knows. Good luck.
