Yo Branden,

Is this it? "JOS. A. MAGNUS & CO., Cincinnati, Ohio, light inside stain, quart, clear, 10", near mint. $22." From.

"JOS A MAGNUS & CO.

The 64th annual report of the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce lists Joseph A Magnus and Benj. J Mielziner as being associated with this company in 1912. The 1914 report adds Saul Magnus to this list.

The company used the brand names:
"Apollo Club Rye", "Asa Holt", "Bob Taylor", "Bonnie Brook", "Golden Rule", "Lover's Delight", "Magnus Horseshoe", "Magnus Private Stock", "Magnus XXX", "Maximus", "Murray Hill Club", "Police", "Royal Seal", "Sand Mountain", "Seth Wakefield", "Tom Boone's Old Randolph", "Uncle Bob", "Vigilant", and "Ye Olde Tavern Fine Rye."

Business name timeline:
Jos A Magnus & Co.

Address timeline:
29 Main (1895), 49 Main (1896-1900), & 337 Main (D: 1900-1902), 121-125 E 8 th (1903-1918)" From.

This one's a handsome model. When're ya gonna break through the photographic glass ceiling?

I have a square quart Magnus with a silver plated casing that covers the sides of the bottle from the shoulder and down the sides and bottom . It has the same engravings that is embossed on the bottle . There is something else engraved , I think the name of a bar making it a bar bottle I guess . I have never seen another one like it . If I do not forget this post , when I have the time , I will figure out where it is and take pictures of it . I might have posted that bottle on here a good many months ago , can't remember for sure now if I did or not .

From Bruce/logueb

So Branden,

How about the above? Anything like your un-pictured Magnus?

Have you checked out Photobucket or Flickr for your photographic needs, yet?

Well then, Louis,

Please do show us. Sooner or later, Branden's gonna say, "bingo."

I think these are handsome whiskies. I'd like to see more.

Well , I would show you if I knew what box the blasted thing is packed away in . I have boxes in the attic , in a building at the back of the yard , as well as the garage . I think the quart one covered in silver plate is on a shelf in the garage . If I can remember , tomorrow I will check and see if I can get to it , and will post a picture of it . I have no idea where the amber one is , I just remember putting it away in a box a year or two ago . I don't know why I keep all the bottles I have being so many of them are boxed up . Just can't get myself to let go of them . Its a sickness I guess . I believe there are actually five or six different variations of the Magnus bottles that I have seen over the years . I do not believe that any of them are rare .

Well Surf , went out looking for the bottles today , found the big one encased with the silver plate but was unable to locate the amber one . It is just like the one you show except that it is amber . One thing I did see was that the incising on the silver plate is not exactly as the embossing on the glass of the one that is shown . It has Murray Hill Club incised and only has the Lion trade mark with Magnus incised underneath . I tried looking though the bottom to see if the bottle was embossed , but could not tell if it was or not . I am thinking the bottle is not embossed  , but can't be sure . I also have a pretty big clear rectangular Magnus , close to maybe a quart size somewhere , looked for it too but came up empty finding it . It is embossed the same as the quart one shown in the post .

Marking on bottom .

I am not sure if the Murray Hill Club was located in Cincinnati or not , but I am guessing that it was .
