When diving for bottles in Eastport, Maine I have to check to see if they are occupied.  Most times they are not but sometimes they  contain marine invertebrates and many times some type of fish like this juvenile pout.  When this one grows up he'll be close to three feet long!

You can see in the photo the type of encrustation that has to be dealt with.  A dip in diluted muriatic acid easily removes the lavender coralline algae.

Here's another underwater shot from Eastport, Maine.

The bottom is littered with many broken and unbroken bottles and other debris thrown from the wharves and steamships.  Here is one other shot showing a broken bottle and a sea slug aka nudibranch.

In the other photo with the fish you can see a piece of coal at the bottom left of the shot.  That particular area is the site of an old naval coaling station which is particulary loaded with clay pipes and bottles.  Digging through the old coal is a bit of a pain underwater though as the area is sloped and the coal from above just keeps falling in to the areas I am digging.

Hello Alan,

Thank you, for sharing those photos. They are awesome!
This summer, I will get to go diving for the first time and hopefully, I will get to go all summer! Any suggestions on places I could explore?

Take care,
Sherry

Thanks for all the compliments.

Underwater photography is my primary passion.  I've been doing it for more than twelve years now.  I've won a few awards and have been published.

I got the bottle hunting bug while doing my underwater photography.  I began noticing that many of the bottles that contianed creatures I was photographing were old and thus began the hunt.  Sometimes I pursue both hobbies at once other times I just focus on one.  Lately I've been bottle hunting more often than taking photos probably because of the newness of bottle hunting.

Sherry -

Scuba diving is a great hoby and pairs well with bottle collecting.  I do most of my underwater bottle hunting in Eastport, Maine which is not a place for beginners as there are very strong tidal currents.

If bottle diving is something you want to try then dive near old wharves, bridges or dumps.  They are not necessarily the prettiest dives due to the "junk" thrown in the water but we all know "junk" can be treasure!

If you'd like more information on diving anywhere let me know.

Nice pics Alan. I'm fortunate just to be able to see the bottles where I dive, much less if anything's in them. A good day is a foot and a half of viz. Are you still diving? I'm trying to force myself into my drysuit and get back in the water.
