Found this tody on the landing. (The landing is beside a very old foundation.)
An aqua marble with green, blue and white swirls. This pic is enlarged and cropped. I think this marble is "pontiled", meaning I think the one side shows where it may have come off the punty and been ground down a bit. You can see it in the pic if you look close.

Some questions.

Is it pontiled, or rather were they made in that way in the old days?
How long have marbles been made in America?
Can anyone give me a link on the subject?

Yes, I have located at least one privy there too..

OT.

Hey oldtimer, Here is a pretty good site: http://www.marblealan.com I don't know much about marbles, but I think Norm (Maine Digger), and also Diggerjeff have quite a collection. They can probably help you. Happy Diggin, Kelley

Hey OT,
Do a search (above) on "marble" for past threads, one year or more, and you'll see links on some of the replies to great marble sites. You could also go a Google search to see the many sites available online. Good luck and great find.

PS. Your picture has way too much white space and is VERY blurry.

The camera is a $35.00 Argus from Wal-mart. It sucks for close up shots. Its focus is 1 meter and out. I checked Google and looked at a few sites. I saw none like mine, most have fairly even spacing on the colors. Mine is very crude. I am happy enough.

See another pic here. The pontil is on the right here.

Hi OT, I got hooked on marbles due to being hooked on bottles. It seems every time I dig a dump or work a foundation I'm finding marbles. That also includes my property, our home is 1830s, and I've found lots of marbles when working the gardens. Unfortunately, I really can't make out the details of yours. How large is it in diameter, if over 3/4'' it's likely a 'shooter'. Any cracks or pieces taken out? Yes, marbles were pontiled up until the machine-made ones started appearing in the 20s. As with bottles, condition is everything when it comes to marbles, with one great exception. A 'near mint' marble can be one with dings and surface scratches etc., somethings that often renders the less than very scarce bottles nearly valueless isn't nearly as crucial with mibs. The 'alansmarbles' site is one of the best, I believe he is a former Mainer, so you know he can be trusted Try 'marble maniacs' just follow the links. For the record, I have some dug marbles that are in the $50 range and a lot of $5 - $10s. I just one an auction for 409 mixed marbles on e-bay for $20, that should return 10x that easily based on the pictures the seller posted. The very early marbles are all German, 1845, the first american made didn't appear until the 20's. Check out those web sites

It is about 1/2", with a crude pontil- nearly tear drop in shape. It has surface impuritys like one would expect a crude bottle to have. The "added color-blobs" look like they have distinct edges, like they would fall out if you wanted to pry..

Here's another few pics, not much better. You can see the pontil area in the second pic...The first pic has the marble with some old money..1921 silver dollar, buffalo nickels, mercury dimes (1941 and one older one) German Riechmarks, and WWII Japanese "occupation note"....

OT, sounds like a "Transistional" marble; they were early attempts at machine producing marbles. It's a combination of machine and hand made, usually the surface has fold lines - 'diaper-fold' pontils, along with ground pontils. They're very collectible. And I know it's frustrating, but it's still very difficult to make out any details in your picture.

sorry, the picture didn't post, I was going to post a pic of a transitional marble. If you're attempting to get info regarding a mib, you need a fairly clear photo.

Great pic Norm. What's your secret? Hey Oldtimer, love the coins. Haven't found any yet myself. I did dig this up last weekend, along with the ink in no great finds. I just love old stuff. Don't we all?

Hi James, my 'secret' is a $750 Sharp digital camcorder my youngest son bought He's into broadcasting, original movies etc. I borrow it when I need to. I take care regarding lighting etc., made my own light box out of an old 10'' bathroom florescent circular fixture. I'm going to pick up a straight digital camera without the 'movie' elements, the pictures are better. And actually, a standard film camera with a good lens and the right speed film will give you much better pics than digital. Hey, is that a clay or glass marble you got there?

Hey Norm, found this today in a 20's, 30's dump. What do they call this particular marble? (Other than round ) Found a lot of bottles too although they were all abm. Happy Diggin, Kelley

PS That is a tiny bottle it's on. It's not a shooter

Howdy guys, I Guess I'll build a box too. Thanks for sharing. The white marble must be clay. It's not at all glass. Measures 1 1/16th". It looks like someone just rolled it between their hands. I am still attempting to appraise it.

Kelly, that's a pretty marble you found What's the other side of it look like? I'm guessing a Akro Agate Oxblood slag. It may be an oxblood corkscrew, but I can't tell by this one picture. The colors are great, that's a nice find! Check out Alan's Marbles, you should be able to come up with an identification.

Nice Marbles .. Im jealous b/c i have lost all mine lol

Anyway... Since I have a junky digital camera that wont take good pics of small objects,
I put a magnifying glass to the camera lens, and get great results..

Just thought I would pass the idea along..

i belive the red and green marble is called a turkey swirl. the swirl folds back on it self but does not make a full 360 deg. like a corkscrew.

Cool idea Dawn. Who says you have to spend Mega bucks to get a good closeup? Thanks Diggerjeff. What I know about marbles, you could put in a thimble with plenty of room for your finger left over! I may start trying to learn though, seems like a pretty neat collectible. I never knew there were so many different kinds. Happy Diggin, Kelley
