I'm posting this as a belated response to Steve. Back when we were talking about Amelung and early MD glass houses I mentioned I had found some shards of the original window glass for my house. I didnt have a peice laying around at the time but I just found one cleaning up.
I'm pretty sure it was locally made glass. Its an olive green tint. It does have some fine ripples and small globs of glass but is really pretty well made for the age.

That's pretty cool Matt! I work as a glazier and believe it or not, most people don't want old or crude glass in their windows,...I save what I can for projects and displays....There's even a company that reproduces "Old" look glass, but just like a repro of a bottle, It looks pretty phoney.

ya I used some of the repro glass in a cabinet and it doesnt look right.

I am searching for a large peice of old glass, like 12"x14" to restore an Eli Terry clock I have.
If you run across anything that big let me know and I'd buy it or trade bottles for it.

I think I have a piece that would make that size....P.M me the exact dimensions and I will cut it to the size you need, and it will be easier to ship too.

P.S Matt the glass that I have is aprox. 1/8" thick...will that work for you?

Matt your home is quite near where Amelungs factory was located, and they made a ton of window glass at that site so it is probably safe to assume the original window glass in your home was made there as sheet glass was not able to be transported very far due to breakage. The color is a dead match for the common bottle glass that was produced. Thanks for posting this a year later!! Just kidding it looks great. If you could find an additional piece you would be willing to part with let me know I am interested as I have window glass from Wistarburgh in New Jersey,Glassboro in New Jersey,Stiegels in Pennsylvania, Hilltown in Pennsylvania and the Washington DC glass works.PM or shoot me an email a price if you want Matt. Thanks Steve.

There was also another early glass factory probably a mile north of me. I dont member if the dates matched up though.
Its on a creek that empties into the Monocacy River. I was going to try to kayak up it this fall but didnt get a chance.

I'll be happy to send you some glass Steve just email me your address. I find it when digging around the house.

Thanks joe that should work. Can you set it aside until after the Chistmas shipping crazyness? I'd hate to ship a plate of glass this time of year. I'll try to remember to get with you after the new year and work out a deal.

I love old windows. Makes everything sorta wavey...

My house is 1922, not overly old, but the windows are all original. The glass is clear but crude, and the mechanisms for opening them still work, with the chains and everything.

I was thinking I need the bottom section of glass for the clock but I actually need the top. The top is 11 1/8 x 11 1/8 exactly.
I am going to reverse paint the bottom section.

Nice piece I can't believe its colored.  I've been saving lots of little pieces from Stonetown, they are extremely thin.  I havent cleaned much up and a lot of it is opalescent but I cant recall a lot of waviness or bubbles which seems strange.  I figured by saving enough I might be able to figure out the size of the panes and possibly the windows??  How thick is that colored piece?  A goofy thought, but I also wondered if it would be possible to figure out what burned down Stonetown by doing forensics on the window pieces, say for example it was a Molotov cocktail or something.  This is also stupid but I look at those pieces and wonder what it would have looked like to peer in back in the day.

Matt,

that window glass is very cool i can't say I have ever seen and colored window glass turn up in Baltimore privies so it has to be local to you. But I will also say I never paid much attention to broken window glass in privies. Now I guess I will be bringing broken window glass home from digs to take a closer look at it.

Chris

Most of the early dug window glass is probably going to be very opalized and hard to see it true nature.
The window glass I have fell down on the inside wall of the basement so it was better protected from the elements.
Its pretty much standard 1/8" thickness.

There was an clock like this at a country auction when we were stationed in England. The reverse painting was very nice. Because it was American no one really wanted it and it sold for about $35. I would have loved to have it but I think I had about $25 in my pocket
