Hi there, xaalaax. The bottle usually called a "Maugham's patent" is actually mis-described, as the actual patent was for Carrara Water. Having said that, no one seems to take a great deal of notice on that, and persist in calling the long, round ended bottle with the blob top and short neck a Maugham's patent. As the bottle would not stand up, it was always layed flat to keep the cork wet, as you have said. The idea of a crown seal rather than a blob top is very odd, someone may have patented the adaption.
