I recently bought a maugham patent. that is the bottle with the round base as apposed to the pointed base of the hamilton or torpedo. sounds normal so far right? the strange thing is the bottle has a crown seal. now i know the purpose of the round base whas to keep the cork wet and prevent the cork drying out and being forced out by the pressure. but a crown seal? isnt this a little pointless?[image][/image]

Hi there, xaalaax.

The bottle usually called a "Maugham's patent" is actually mis-described, as the actual patent was for Carrara Water. Having said that, no one seems to take a great deal of notice on that, and persist in calling the long, round ended bottle with the blob top and short neck a Maugham's patent.

As the bottle would not stand up, it was always layed flat to keep the cork wet, as you have said.

The idea of a crown seal rather than a blob top is very odd, someone may have patented the adaption.

Cheers,

Tandy
