This 1860 Army Sword Belt Plate was found on Friday afternoon in the back yard of a local 1860s home. The first pic is as found, the second after a bath in warm hydrogen peroxide and rinse under cool water.

Hey Mike,

Great Belt Plate! We gotta get you so you can post multiple pix.

See the "IMG Code" in the little box to the left and below your photo on the bucket-o-photos page. That's the ticket, almost.

You gotta change their [IMG] & [/IMG] to [image] & [/image] and you got it:

Or, just type in one of these: [image]copy the "Direct Link" here & bracket it with one a these[/image] = pictures.

Very cool find. See if you can find who owned the house back in 1860 and you may have a veteran's name to go with it. I dug a similar one (model 1851 Officer's sword belt plate - at least 31 variations!). Here is a pic along with a pic of the veteran in an 1870's town band. In our local history book was an 1876 map with the name of the owner of the foundation, Griffith G. Ellis also his name is listed as a local having served in the civil war. Found shards of a USA Hospital bottle at the same foundation. Does it have the tongue on the back and is it narrow (approx 1/2 inch) or wider (approx 3/4 inch)?

looks like the wreath is integral rather than soldered on?? Is there a stamped number on the back?

Here are some I found... http://www.mattsoldhouse.com/MC/civilwar/plates.htm

The tongue on the back is 1 1/4" wide. No markings that I can see through the crud on it. The tongue is pushed down against the buckle at the end, so it could probably be bent back up easily.

The hook is often missing on those so bent isnt a big deal. Dont straighten it, collectors dont like relics modified.

I double checked mine and I oopsed, it is also 11/4 inch wide.  Now I'm not sure about the size of the narrower hooks but I was told the wider ones like ours were not produced until 1863.
