Unfortunately this is a sad tale - After Rich Green passed away 2/14/06, my wife (his sister) and I had a party 6/03/06 - on this night one of our so-called friends and bottle digger walked out of our house with a box containing the family heirlooms from my wife's grandfather. Bottles that were in the family (Dayton Froelich/Green) for about 76 years were stolen. The highest value bottles are a Cobalt Washington Taylor Pint in Excellent condition $8,000- this bottle can be identified by a special mark. The next is a smaller half-pint beautiful emerald green Fells Point with little boat on one side and lighthouse on the other $6,000.  An olive Washington/Jackson pint excellent condition was included $575. Also several mint slipware plates (small with yellow squiggle lines) and a amber cigar bottle were in the box.

The latest news is that we have a possible eyewitness and other evidence compiled against a main suspect. We have just learned at Shrupps Grove that this suspect fled to Williamsburg VA right after the robbery. This was a place the suspect had tried to live for about a year one time in the past.

So there is a chance all these goods were cashed in or near Williamsburg shortly after 6/08/06.
1) If anyone has seen or heard talk about two such high profile bottles being traded please let us know.
2) If anyone has contacts in the Williamsburg bottle scene that may have seen such spectacular bottles traded let me know.

I have detailed pictures if you need them.  Thank you.

Gary,

So sorry to hear about this. I have always felt comfortable opening my home to other collectors, and it is disturbing to hear that some folks would take advatage of that.

You may want to post pics, especially of the special "marking" of these flasks. This guy can't get far with these, they will turn up. The auctioneers should be alerted, and watch the Ebay listings. Also check Craig's List postings. Most collectors will not buy "great colored flasks that are priced cheap" without asking some questions.

I will keep a look out for these pieces.

Mike

Hi Gary and Welcome to Antique-Bottles.Net -
Instead of PMing you, I'm trying to bump this thread. It may be a good idea to make up an email w/ details and photos that we could send out there. I'm in the central VA area and will keep an eye out, for sure. I'm in Williamsburg (lived there a good many years) every now and then, looking for glass.

If you write something up w/ pics, I can stick it in our (Richmond, VA bottles - RABCA) next club newsletter. Really, you should get this out quickly to as many bottle folks as possible.

Thank you for the replies - I made some corrections as to the date 6/3/06 and such -  I sent one email to a key contact in the Richmond club so far. The manager of Williamsburg Antique Mall wants my info and will post it there for 400 dealers to see. I also see there are many more antique shops in Gloucester VA.

Let me know where to email and also how to post the pictures. If we find even one piece in the Willimasburg area - this would clinch our case and bring a little closure.  Some people said we would never see them again. I am hoping because the bottles are such high profile that some good hearted person may have seen or heard something.

In Other news:
At Shrupps Grove there was a digger from Danville PA who showed me the first colored (Olive) Fells Point with Lighthouse and Boat 1/2 pint I have seen since our Emerald Green one was stolen. He dug it and it is sick so he is talking about having it tumbled. I asked him about price and he said $3-4k. I do not have his contact info.

Overall I was underwhelmed by the historic flask selection at Shrupps and understand many dealers are targeting York.

It's indeed a shame. Those are grand looking flasks....But - I just don't know Guys...Unless the OP's date is a typo, it's been 2 years and these flasks have found their way into someone's collection...maybe even passed through several hands on the way. While they are indeed recognisable and would be remembered, any collector that unknowing bought them, would not likely be so willing to admit to having same or,  surrender same at this point.  One reason - they would be returned to the rightful owner and the buyer may be charged as an accessory or, at the least be out the $$$ he paid. A no win situation it seems ...I'll keep my eyes open and spread the word, just in case...

Any loss by theft has to be mind altering and I'm truely sorry for you, but I agree with Whiskeyman. If I unwillingly purchased one or all of these from the thief and then heard through the grapvine they were stolen and being sought would never make mention of it. Not because i'd be afraid of being implicated in the dasterdly deed but rather the large sum of money I'd be out. Contact the god given rightful owner and say "here, sorry about the mix up." What recourse then? Sue the seller? What are the chances he/she has a pot to piss in if they're stealing from their friends homes? Nope, i'd store them away safely and discretley sell them in five years or so. Sorry that's how I roll
Lobey.

I agree with the whole thing - unfortunately we had so much to deal with at the time that we packed things up not knowing that box was gone. These people were collectors of everything plus pack rats. This thief was very surgical and had to know Rich Green and his Grandfathers bottles - he left things of higher value because he was specifically a bottle digger "friend" and the suspect we know is not as sophisticated about other collectibles.

After one year we had an appraisel and discovered the bottles missing but it brought back a memory I had that there were fewer slip ware plates arranged in one box the day after the party 6/308 and I wondered if anything happened. What I had detected then was that there was stuff taken and it turned out to be the best bottles.
Then the next disapointment happened when we started to talk to our friends about "police" it turned out my one friend's kid had gotten into trouble and no one wanted any part of police - no one wanted them knocking on their doors. So to keep peace we had to just eat it for now - but I keep looking 2 years later and just got this Williamsburg news. If there is even old news that one of those bottles transacted in VA area we can clinch the case at least privately against the main suspect. We know who did it - we need some sort of smoking gun.
Getting the bottles back is a whole different story and we have to respect the circumstances - the best would be if we could buy them back - realistically I agree that many honest people would not even mention they have them. Strange things can happen though and it is a small world. Who can keep totally silent - maybe I will see them at York in a showcase!

Plus imagine finding the bottles gone and having no pictures. It was about 3 months later that we found the pictures that I posted. We still have not found pictures of Rich Greens whole display that included the slip ware plates. So if we went to the police the next day after 6/3/06 - we had no pictures - just verbal descriptions.
On a positive note - I would not be going to all these bottle shows if this did not happen. It has made me into a much more serious bottle collector. So far I have aquired 4 historic flasks to try to make up for the gap - it will be years though until we can aquire a colored flask in the 6-8K range. The other thing is they are so rare to find and are more at the high end bottle auctions or traded in back rooms.

Just a side note....The lighthouse you mentioned, that was on the reverse side of the fells point flask. It isnt a light house, its the washinton monument that is in Blatimore. Figured I would throw that in there for accuracy. Sorry for your loss.

This is a really sad story.  How low people can get is beyond my comprehension.  I sincerely hope you find the culprit. I will take copies of the pictures with me when I migrate for the winter.  This gang of honest people should all be helping you - that is a force bigger than the police world.  Good Luck.  RED Matthews

Very sad indeed, probably a closet crack head and needed fast money? Is there a statue of limitations on arresting this person on grand theft or have you gotten a warrant already? The warrant will not expire. As for a dealer having them in their possesion would not make them a access to the fact. I do know that pawn shop dealers buy stolen goods and are not prosecuted, but they have guide lines they have to obey first before resale, they take a huge risk but at least they get the person selling items personal info. Have you thuoght about offering a reward for returned items no questions asked? Just a thought. good luck, god bless.
